Looking at getting a new vehicle to tow behind our class A. Would like an all wheel drive. I've read the ford explorer owners manual and its a "no" for it.
Does anyone know what SUV vehicles can be towed? Besides a Jeep, been there, done that.

Thanks

Mr Mark, do you use a brake assist unit when towing your CR-V?

Don, Honda CRV's can be towed flat down (all four wheels down) up to the year of 2014. Good Luck, trying to buy one there hard to get!

I got a used '14 in February. Seemed to be a lot available around the Tampa area.

We bought a new (2015) Jeep Cherokee primarily because it has a little button (make sure you get the correct transfer case!) you can depress and flat tow away.

But, the tranny is TERRIBLE. I would not recommend anybody get this car.

Good luck.

Define: Terrible.

The Ford's are really difficult. You put the tranny in N. That's it!

The Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango (late models) AWD are certainly towable. The FORD has a 65MPH speed limit and you should get out and start it every 6 hours. The Durango is a transfer case, so no speed limit or starting every so often. Both are nice and heavy, 5100 to 5500 appox. A Chevy Equinox or Jeep Cherokee would be just as nice, a bit smaller, and lighter.

I tow a Ford SHO and 2 Jeeps, a Wrangler and a Cherokee. (not at the same time) if anyone has questions on those specifically. I prefer 4 down, always. Such a good way to take a vehicle.

There are many, Assorted Publications run lists from time to time. FMCA is one, and other RV mags.

RemcoTowing has a web page where you can enter a car's details and find out if it's towable, or towable with modification. (You can goodle them).

I do know some CHEVy/GMC products can be towed, There is some special hoops to jump through but it can be done. Not sure about any other make. Save Jeep. And not all jeeps can be towed.

Mr. Don,

Ford makes a lot of cars and trucks for towing as does General Motors. Honda CR-V's up to 2014 can be towed 4 down (AWD or 2WD). We are on our second Honda as they tow so well. Seems as though a lot of the foreign cars are only towable with a manual transmission like Suburu's.

I'm thinking of selling my Honda CR-V as my sister wants to buy it and I would like a better color match to the new motorhome. So, I've been looking at the Lincoln MKX (same as a Ford Edge). The Ford Escape and Lincoln MKC are not towable four down.

The Motorhome Magazine towing guide shows the 2016 Ford Explorer as towable in 2WD and 4WD.

Good luck,
MM.
