Had our catalytic converter stolen

So this past Sunday our storage lot called and told me I was the lucky winner to have our Catalytic converter cut out by some wonderful individual that felt he needed it more then I did. I've looked at part prices online, but so far after 5 calls I've not been able to get an actual quote from any shop. Before I call into insurance, can anyone share an actual price they've paid to replace one in F-53 chassis?

If you are, we would have read already about you already in the headline being hit by Exocet missile launched using her Tesla tracking apps.:E

Wow, that pinpoint level of accuracy???

And I used to resent my iPhone as "husband tracking device".

I thought it was interesting that one of the most targeted vehicles for Cat theft is the Toyota Prius. As an ultra low-emissions vehicle, the Prius has a catalytic converter that contains more of the rhodium, palladium and platinum that render pollutants harmless. A replacement can cost as much as $3000.

What do you think the VALUE of Electric Car Battery banks are????? Thousands of dollars. Doug

True, but harder to get out in a hurry. Iโ€™m thinking load it into an enclosed trailer with a faraday cage so Tesla (or the owner) canโ€™t see it on the tracking software. Hard to hide otherwise. My wife always knows when Iโ€™m in the lineup at Wendyโ€™s getting a frosty. Really sucks. :).

I'm thinking you can't remove the battery bank in 10 minuets with a battery powered sawzall.

A Tesla battery pack weighs around 1200lb, so an RV pack must be at least 2000 lb if not heavier. I'll be happy to hold the thief's legs in place if he's going to crawl under the battery to cut it loose.

I am 66 years old. I am NEVER amazed at the ingenuity of thieves. They ALWAYS find a way to do theft regardless of what Honest people think they can do. Doug

Converters on the legal salvage market are worth plenty---one particular Volvo is around $600. My friend owns a salvage yard where all he does is scrap the cars, no used parts sales. First thing he does is cut off the converters. I have been there 3 times when he sold them and once he got $27,000, once $52,000, and once $98,000. He has a container full right now waiting to go. He don't deal with the thieves that are selling them for little or nothing to buy drugs but rest assured they are a very valuable commodity.

But you have to steal the whole car first.

And thieves know they have tracker that they are unable to disable.

Why are they stolen? For black market resale? Is the value of the platinum/palladium coated ceramic beads in them really worth that much? Stunning how many bottom feeders inhabit the human race....

No - the scumbags who steal them get about $50 for the scrap metal. My daughter had hers stolen (a Ford Escort) and I think insurance paid about $600 to have it replaced. These are true crack-heads that do this.

We had 8 stolen 2 months ago and those were NEW units. So, we went back with OEM Ford Converters to prevent emission warranty problems. Each one was about $1400 plus about $200 labor as we had to have it done at the dealership. Aftermarket will probably be a lot cheaper. Doug

Thank you very much Doug that's very helpful!
