Just starting a search for a " toad " Wanting something to tow behind an '03 Fleetwood on a F53 chassis with the V10 gas motor.
Thinking of a Geo tracker - though I don't really know why. I guess there are other makes just as practical. I'm thinking the 4WD might be handy. One reason I'd consider a Tracker is that I should be able to flat tow it without worrying about the transmission. I'm thinking that even the auto. trans ( in a 4WD )has a transfer case that can be shifted into neutral. True?
Obviously, I'm not style conscious, as evidenced by thinking of the tracker. I don't need this vehicle for any other use other than grocery runs and local travel after arriving at the campsite. I don't want to spend a lot of money.
Suggestions ?

I towed a tracker for about 10 yrs... great little car and fun to drive. It's so light, you barely know it's there. I now tow a Ford Ranger.

Flat towed a 1996 Geo Tracker for 6 years. Went fulltime in 2002 and decided to purchase our first NEW vehicle after 45 yrs of marriage. Wanted another Tracker because of reliability & ease to tow with the 96'. Purchased a 2003 Chevrolet Tracker ZR2 4x4. Actual weight on the scale is 3200#. Has 159k on the clock & 60k towed. Again with no problems, transfer case in neutral, trans in park, unlock steering wheel, GO. DW wanted ANOTHER new vehicle. Happy 57th. No more Trackers sold in US, so purchased a 2014 Honda CRV Dec 2014. Tracker too good to tradein, so still have it.

I love the HHR so much it's the only vehicle I've ever had that I'll run totally into the ground before I get rid of it. So light that I can't tell it's behind there, and more then enough room inside when you need it.

I have towed a Pontiac Vibe (good vehicle), a Subaru Outback (excellent but a little heavy for my taste), a jeep wrangler (my least favorite vehicle), and on a whim I found and purchased a 1996 Geo Tracker four wheel drive with automatic transmission. This has been my favorite tow vehicle and I have found myself driving it very frequently in the warmer seasons but these cars very prone to rust it gets to rest all winter. It is a convertible small but lots of fun!

Okay, I've decided. Want to keep this simple. An older Tracker if I can find one. Or maybe a street legal dune buggy. No flat towing and no dolly towing. I own a trailer that I used to haul a race car on. It has brakes and license already. I think the trailer will be the most simple overall. About the only modification will be to add the brake control which I have already in the truck. Simply unplug and transfer to motorhome. Decided on the tracker because of the 4WD and light weight.
Thanks for all the replies, made for interesting reading.

Four down is the best way for keeping things simple and if you're gonna do a lot of traveling, hitting a lot of parks, including State and National and a few Walmart's as well, you're going to get tired of that trailer, real quick like, I can tell you that and they can be a real hindrance.

I would suggest a hitch on the toad to move the trailer or to pull it a short distance, empty of course.
I think you would be better off flat towing.

We towed a 1991 Chevy Tracker for 10 years, a 2001 for 10 years then DW fell in love with a 2011 Jeep Wrangler 4 door soft top. All towed well, though I think the Jeep would have been a bit much for the gasser. It was fine with the small DP.

Over all I preferred the Trackers, though DW loved her Jeep. (She did like the Trackers though). Both Trackers hit the 180,000 Km mark (112,000 miles) or more, still running fine. Tracker would be my preference.

We have towed a 94 Honda Accord with a manual trnsmission for about 3 years. In October we bought a 2014 CR-V to replace it, mainly due to the Accord's age. I don't have the CR-V rigged to tow yet, but I hope to soon. Camping season in California has started, well it never stopped, really.

We love our Honda Fit. Not a lot of money, great gas mileage and a lot of room. You will need to get one 2014 or earlier.

As a side note, I am very disappointed that Honda has decided to ignore the RV market in 2015.

The first and most important question you must answer is what are you going to use it for when not traveling. If you will just park it anything will do that is listed on the towable lists.
Next question is how many times a week you will tow it when in the motor home, Some vehicles take 5 minutes to hook up and others take 30-40 minutes
next question is aux brakes or not. A lite vehicle not a suburban toad yes
