No Converter Charge Current

Installed two new 6 volt US batteries to replace old T-105 Trojans in our 2004 Tioga 26Q. Connected all cables and wires as they were previously. Checked voltage, read only 12.42 volts, no charging current getting to the batteries. Checked all fuses and breakers including two fuses on the original WFCO 45 amp simple converter box. Read 120 vac at receptacle where converter plugs into the breaker panel. Cycled the auxiliary battery switch and interior lights went of and on normally. The converter apparently has died suddenly, has no battery charging output, it's not humming, fan not cycling on and off. Converter has been working recently.

Is there something I should check before replacing the converter??

Yup, even with a Battery Minder you need to monitor electrolyte levels as often as needed and keep connections clean and tight.I think that 10 years useful life with old T-105's was pretty good. And almost continuous use of the converter/charger for ten years is not bad either.

Our 26Q has become one of those low-milage, seldom driven,"driveway queens" as we have aged and become more arthritic and less active. Logically we should sell, but have been camper/tourers since the late 50's, lifestyle thing, hard to give it up. It was our "apartment in the driveway" during a year-long home renovation/remodelling ordeal and while wife was concurrently being treated for breast cancer.

Hopefully we can muster the energy again to get more active in motorhoming in future.

Your old converter contributed to the demise of your previous batteries. Get a PD converter and they will charge faster and you can leave it plugged in without worrying about boil off. You still need to check you water level though.

I poked pins into the charge cables at the converter and read 12.4 vdc same as at battery terminals, indicated continuity but nothing coming out of converter, pretty sure converter is really dead. Converter is getting 120vac.Will check to make sure negative cable is making good contact with frame.

You may have a circuit breaker or fuse in the wire between the converter and the battery. Be sure to check for voltage on the converter side of that. Best to check right at the converter as Old-Biscuit said.

Thanks,Ichabod, I'll probably order from Randy, sent him an e-mail, mentioned the PD converter that you recommended. The old original converter had no "float" mode and batteries ran low on fluid.

As others have said the output should be 13.6V DC. If it isn't then it is dead.

Having the same vintage converter/charger as yours I just gave up on it and installed a US Made, newer 3 stage charger/converter.

Like THIS ONE it is a direct, plug and play unit. And you can keep it plugged in 27/7 without boiling those new batteries, that is what I do and have no problem at all.

It is cheaper on E BAY Plus Free Shipping.

It is the same one as Best Converter sells and has the same Factory Warranty included in the box.

I checked the two fuses mounted next to the charging cable connector blocks and all other fuses in battery compartment and in AC/DC power panel. I pushed pins into the white and red cables the run to the house battery and measured 12.4vdc there, indicating continuity to the batteries.

With 120V AC power in converter output should be 13.6V DC

Check the converter output where battery cables connect to converter.....positive and negative.
Not putting out 13.6V DC...converter is bad.

Replace with a 3 stage charger/converter.

Many converters have fuses on the 12V outputs. Check yours...
