We will be headed to Chapel Hill NC to take our granddaughter back to the University of North Carolina and get her moved into the dorm. Need your recommendations on a place to stay with a 40 foot motor home, 3 slides, a toad and 50 amp service. We have one Lab and two Chihuahuas. Would appreciate your suggestions on an RV park in or very close to UNC.

We've stayed at Spring Hill a couple of times, nothing fancy but a good place to stay with a really nice owner (at least it was a few years ago). There isn't much else in the area.

Making a daily commute from the Raleigh state Fair grounds to Chapel Hill everyday would be awful if you have to go during the week. But The state park closes at 9pm and opens at 8am. So, here's your choices...Hope you have a toad.

We are currently in the campground at the fairgrounds in Raleigh. It is not a destination park but for overnight or to visit the area it is fine. $25 a night. Using a GOS use the address 801 Youth Center Drive, Raleigh to get here.

Hello and Welcome!

Unfortunately, there are no RV parks in or near Chapel Hill. Spring Hill, mentioned in a post above, I didn't know about, and turns out to be a mobile home park that seems to take RVers -- they have mostly good reviews on RV Park Reviews, with some mixed-poor reports. There used to be a couple of RV sites in the parking lot for the Dean Smith Center, but those disappeared some time ago. I just checked the UNC web site and found this link, which may be useful:
RV Parking at UNC. The parking for RVs mentioned at the Friday Center is for event parking, i.e., not for 'camping'. But, the website does have links to good quality campgrounds at Jordan Lake, a 20-30 min drive from town by car. Those would be the closest one I'm aware of.

Feel free to PM me if you have problems finding a place to camp ...

Contact the UNC Department of Public Safety and inquire if RV parking would be available at the "Friday Center." Not sure if hookups are available, but they do make that center available for RV parking for big games and events. On move-in day, they may make the same accommodations.

Just a thought to throw out there, normally fair grounds have full hook up spots for the fair workings during the fair, so might could contact the town of Chapel Hill & see where their fair grounds is located & if you could rent a spot.

One other note, good luck with the 40 foot & toad on campus streets, but then again & suppose that is what the toad is for.

C-Leigh- When they are coming the fair is not in town. Chapel Hill has no fairgrounds.

Don't want to give away my secrets 🙂 But Lake Jordan State Recreation area might be your best bet. 30 amp service and water. But it's beautiful, cheap, quiet, and patrolled by State park rangers. It's really only minutes from Chapel hill if you take the short cuts.

Spring Hill is not real close to campus, but close to Chapel Hill. Very nice when we stayed there a number of years ago.
