Refrigerator Safety Device

I just finished the install of my Absorption Refrigeration Protective RV Control. I think this is one of the most important installations I've done to my RV...........especially from a safety stand point. Anyone that is concerned about refrigerator fires should take a look at this device. The installation was NOT difficult....but did take a few hours......I installed the unit with a indicator inside the motor home, so running the wires was the most time consuming. I'm sure the installation where the indicator is in the access compartment for the rear of the refrigerator would be much faster. www.arprv.com is where you can read all about it. Spend a little time looking over the website, it's loaded with information, and I think you'll agree, this is a good device to have. I know I'll sleep better knowing I have an extra bit of safety. Next step is to install a fire extinguisher to cover all bases. By the way, Paul at ARPrv was very helpful, you contact him via email or phone.

Thanks for the tips. By the way, would it be possible to put another model fridge in there? Something with an electronic ignition feature? What do you think?

HERE is a 'conversion chart'

For a re-manufactured cooling unit (don't think you will find a NEW unit for your RM 2401 Fridge

HERE is a decent Dometic guide to changing cooling units.

Hey...think you got pretty good use from that 1989 Dometic fridge

Divebobber, you might check this company out. http://www.fixyourfridge.com/.
It's been awhile since I talked to Paul at ARPRV, but I think this is the company he recommends. I'd give him a call and check. He's a very knowledgeable person on these RV Frig units.

By the way, and to offer some personal experience to this topic, my reason for engaging in this discussion was the failure of my Dometic fridge. I had it parked on my driveway, which we use as a volleyball/badminton/basketball court, so it's pretty close to level except for a slight slope for water drainage. I went into my camper and noticed a pretty strong ammonia odor. I thought, "man, my blackwater tank is really fermenting! I didn't think I'd left anything in it!!!" So I opened the toilet flush valve and saw that it was empty, plus it didn't stink as much in the bathroom as it did in the rest of the camper. So, I figured something in the fridge must be causing it (at this point I didn't even know the refrigerant was ammonia...but I was about to find out). When I opened the fridge door I was hit in the face with a blast of anhydrous ammonia, and when I say "hit",. I mean HIT! It was one of the most powerful experiences of ammonia gas I think I ever want to experience. It HURT my face and eyes and caused me to immediately choke. I made it out of that camper like I was on fire. No lasting damage (I hope) but a good learning experience. Thus my interest in the ARP device. I also am in the market for a new cooling unit and am leaning toward RVCOOL which has information about, and recommends the ARP control.

Has anyone actually ever had this unit do what it is supposed to do? I have had mine installed for almost a year and have yet to hear it alarm once no matter how uneven the rv was.

Saw this thread awhile back.
ARP may have saved my fridge
Yes, it was tested when I installed it. Was just curious if anyone had ever seen it actually shut a fridge down. From the other post, it appears it does and will. I have to make a note to check it when I am parked far off level.

Have you checked the log for any activations? No but I will. I did wire mine up with a light and alarm.

What does the manufacturer say to this? Maybe yours hasn't heated up sufficiently. Is there a way of testing your installation?

I haven't seen any indication that the ARPrv has an audible alarm. Have you checked the log for any activations?

"The ARP controls power to the control board. If you fridge does not have a control board the ARP will not work. Check out link above for installation of the ARP."

Thanks for your reply, but the following is the response I got from an ARP representative. Apparently I can use the device. It will turn the burner off in the event of overheating, however, I would have to relight it manually.

"Hi Bob,

Good question, I have a similar fridge in my camper. The ARP Control can control a relay that works with a Norcold thermocouple interrupt adaptor which is placed inline with your Dometic burner thermocouple. When the ARP senses an overheat situation, it turns off the heat by activation of the relay. I have drawings in the user manual found at the following address:

http://www.arprv.com/rv-refrigerator-manuals.html

I plan to post drawings on my website as soon as I can regarding this installation.

The ARP can not restart the fridge as you pointed out, you would have to preform this task your self. Would you rather the fridge turns off or destroys it self? The fridge does not cool when it is off level, thus without the ARP you fridge just fails, with the ARP your fridge turns off and you may have to toss some food, not the food and the fridge :)"

Perhaps it could turn on some sort of in-cabin alarm/light when the fridge is turned off? Otherwise, you may leave for the day, not realizing the fridge needs lit.
