Snakes in RV

It was hot in Nebraska so we kept our front curtain pulled all week to help keep the sun out. What we didn't know is that two snakes liked the heat and found their way in and enjoyed the dashboard. Imagine my surprise when I pulled the curtain back on our get-away day!!! One snake all curled up between the curtain and the windshield!! The snake was yellow and brown, about an inch in diameter, at least two feet long.

It slithered into the window defrost vents. I pulled the trim (about 30 screws) but couldn't see it. Turned on the heater to high, put the fan on high on the defrost setting. It emerged and went to the driver's side window. We assisted it out with a mop handle. Of course it showed it's displeasure by shaking it's tail and striking out a couple times. Was it a rattler? I don't know.

Half an hour later we were heading towards Iowa and my wife began to scream! Another snake!!!!! This one larger!!! I didn't know where it was, I put on cruise control and lifted my feet off the floor. All she would say between screams was that my feet were not in jeopardy. I managed to get off the highway and pull over to a safe place. Then my dearest one said it was on the steering column and every time she screamed it would retreat. I bounded out of my seat and looked. There we were, face to face. The whole time it was within a foot of my hands and legs!!!!

It slithered up to the dashboard and disappeared down the vents. I turned the heater on high again, put on the fan while using the defrost setting and opened the window. It never came out. Suddenly we saw it on the ground, looking for a safe haven. It found a big hole in the concrete and disappeared without waving goodbye with it's tail. This one was definitely bigger, at least 3 feet long, at least inch and a half in diameter.

I don't know where it got out or in, somewhere in the heating/cooling system. Where and how do I start looking? We have a Vortec 8.1 engine.

Not that it matters, we could have picked up a snake or two anywhere in the country, but these two joined us at Walnut Creek Campground in Papillion, NE. Lots of high grass in the vicinity. Great little campground that always gets high ratings. We might be the first to report driving away with some of their slithering wildlife.

This retelling of the story does not convey the fear, panic, or excitement that was going in our rig. Imagine it happening to you and your co-pilot and you might start feeling the rush of adrenalin that I feel right now just telling you about it.

Ck outside of rig put putty tape/screen over any oversized hole where unwanted things may get in. Did that years ago, no problem.
Decon for rodents. They love the stuff.

I'm sitting her laughing as I read this, but I would have died. DH doesn't like snakes that much either. I don't know if he would have been able to keep driving. If I was behind the wheel, I would have had to stop immediately and vacate the RV -- yes even if in the middle of the one traffic lane. Everyone behind would have just had to wait. Glad you are okay.

They still do Pat. We just came through there a week or so ago. Pulled into a rest area and saw the warning signs well posted throughout, with regard to the Rattlesnake warning.

Oh my gosh I AM a wife but I'm positive my husband wouldn't tell me either. Kind of like he hid the fact that he saw a huge cockroach in the middle of our living room floor in our first rental. I HATE cockroaches and rats. Not a huge fan of snakes either and I am a bit woozy reading this but the idea of screening off vents is a good one.. yikes. I was reassured by whoever posted that the dog would have sniffed it out. Our old cocker is losing his sniffer though but a few years back he was obsessed with a wall in our living room. Turns out there were mice in the crawlspace under our house in that very spot. As he's gotten older I have thought it is going to be more of a chore to bring him along but this made me re-think that whole issue! Sorry no advice as to find the snakes except if I were your wife I might find a good hunting dog to borrow before setting foot back in your RV! I definitely would not be able to sleep at night in it!

I'm still hoping to see pics of YOUR snakes. I know you tried to post some, but I and others couldn't see them...what happened? Can we help in any way?

To tell the truth, I've been dying to pass your hilarious story along, and some pictures would be icing on that very funny cake!

One of our early camping trips in the 70's we were moving fast across the west Texas highways going east when one of the tires on the popup blows out and with much swaying I pulled off the side of the road. nerve racking right?? I then walked back and stepped over the trailer hitch into a 5 foot rattler and catapulted into the center of the pop-up roof. Nerves were shot and took a strong drink and a bunch of grass mashing to get down to replace the tire.

Send me a private message and I'll send you the photos. While pandemonium is breaking out, I'm running around the rig looking for the camera. Darn snake didn't really want to pose and didn't take direction very well. it's hard to take a good picture with all screaming going on, mine and hers!

There would be a five-mile long trail of essential bodily fluids on the road. NONONONONONO! No snakes...

You can't point at your own desktop for pictures.
They have to be hosted by a site for that purpose.

You shoulda said YES!

Bet you a thousand bucks he'd have looked in spite of himself- then you could have said "GOTCHA"! :B

Gee, wish I'd thought of that. Would have served him right.

You could look down at his feet and scream!!
