I read this to my wife and she could not stop laughing. I can't imagine how terrible that was, but what a story.

Here in Rattlesnake country we are blessed with only the Pacific Northwest Rattler. They are mostly brown but sometimes dark to medium green, all have tan bellies. Rattle snakes can climb but they don't. Non-venomous snakes can climb,
I've seen them on decks and several feet up in a tree. Rattlers have a head shaped like a spear, a definite neck. Non-venomous have oval shaped heads.
I always go by the head for deciding if it is rattler or not, I don't care about the tail. Rattlesnakes like 50-80 degrees, normally travel alone. They like to keep one side protected, up against wall, tree etc. against predators. Don't worry about eggs, they are born alive and most don't survive the first year.
My 2 cents as I am not an expert but some knowledge to stay safe..
By the way, I believe non-venomous snakes like the garter (greenish with long yellow stripe)can emit a foul odor out when bothered or threatened...EEEWW!
HA!!! How do you distinguish where the foul odor originates, from your under wear or the Snake??:@
