Tent Campers

I was camping this weekend at Kalaloch Campground (pronounced "Clay Lock") N.P.S. and I couldn't believe the tent campers that were in spaces usually used by RV's. RV's were coming in thinking first come and first serve and these tent campers already reserved the RV spots? I have no ill will toward tent campers but RV's couldn't get into sites designed for RV's? I really don't think the N.P.S. really cared because they had $$$ for the site. I'm not going to RV there anymore and that's my choice, but would like to know your take on this? I started RVing in 1976, prior to that I tent camped at Parks that had tent camping on grass not concrete out of respect for RVers!

We also see no reason tent campers can't use the sites. We've been to that campground - if it's the Washington one - and they don't set up their tents on the blacktop, they set it up in the designated tent space. It's a camp space, not a RV space.

As far as reserving sites and not using them, this isn't done only by tent campers. RVers do it, also. This has become a big problem and it's very inconsiderate of folks to do this. They're keeping others from enjoying it. I guess some folks have plenty of extra money to loose money on a reservation. There are some that reserve many weekends - just in case - and if they don't feel like going camping that weekend, they don't care.
I'm not buying in on the camp space not a RV Space! Why, I said this is because of sewer hook-ups designed for RV's.

When we had a pop-up, we had a little shower tent that we used for our porta potti. Maybe the campers wanted the convenience of dumping their porta pottis on site. All I'm trying to say is that their is a reason, or excuse, for why anyone does anything. "ours is not to wonder why..." Peace...

I guess I don't understand your comment about sewer hookups. Perhaps I'm thinking of a different park. If this is the one in Washington's Olympic Nat'l Park, this campground doesn't have any hookups - no water, electric or sewer. It does have a dump station. It also has some sites that don't have a tent pad and perhaps if they were on the pavement, that's why. Did you mention your concern to the park? Perhaps they could explain it better to you.

It's a beautiful campground and in high demand. Sorry your experience was not good.

Not all tent campers are equal. I have seen many that are perfectly happy to pitch their tent on a grassy area and do their thing.
I have also seen tent campers that bring TV's, computers, electric heaters, etc, and need the 120 volt power that they can only get from some of the RV sites.
This is one of the most logical posts to me! There wanting electricity that they cannot get at there tent site.

I would not get upset at the tenters. I would be upset at myself for not making a reservation too.
I had a reservation! I just felt bad for the RV's coming in after being on the road all day and having nowhere to camp. There was also no cell phone service in this area.

I'm probably going to get smacked for this, but I have think skin.

Let's see, someone camps in a Class A motor home, they go to a public first come first serve campground on the busiest camping weekend of the year and they expect other campers to leave a spot for them?

Agree. Having a Motorhome. Don't make you special

There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

Yup, Anyone can reserve and use any campsite unless the facility has rules against that. My F-I-L use to park his motorhome in a site that was not supposed to fit his 35' Bounder, but it did and he was across the street from his little girl, my DW, when we had a popup. So it works both ways, sometimes you are not supposed to fit but you squeeze in and sometimes you have lots and lots of space all around you.

For all we know, those tent campers showed up a day or two or three beforehand, and have been staying there all that time. One cannot leap to conclusions about reservations.

Maybe all the tent-only sites were taken when they arrived, so they paid the extra for an RV spot so they could stay in their preferred CG. No harm, no foul.

Everybody camps in their own way. Some tent, some popup, some tt, c's, and A's. Some may pull up in a little guy camper.... Home made... and some just crash out in their vans. My opinion is to love other PEOPLE. If they are not there, it does bother me son. But to each their own - and they have every right to be there and enjoy the site as much as me. I don't like empty sites that are "reserved" while people are needing a site though... This can get very complicated to fix that problem though.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

The biggest reason that tenters are looking for those sites is for the electric. Back in the day when we tented (mid '80s-early '90s) no one had electronic devices that needed recharging. Now people live and die by them. The state of WI has been upgrading a large number of unimproved sites in the state parks with electric for exactly this reason.
