tires out of round

We are looking at class A motorhomes. A guy told us that good year tires are known for going out of round. Is this guy full of BS or can someone help me understand what he is talking about and if it is true how do you know if a tire is out of round?

Don't know about Goodyear but my Samson tires are starting to drive me crazy, they are making a loud hum at 60-65 mph, checked front bearings and repacked, rotated them, changed air pressure and nothing happens, going to be replacing these tires with something better very soon, some tires just don't belong on motorhomes I guess..

I have heard of out of round tires, but I have never experienced any that have been out of round. I just can not figure how a tire can be out of round because they are made in molds. But if it does occur, I guess it could happen in any brand not just Goodyear.

I use Toyo tires and they give me a very smooth ride.

Op asked how to tell if a tire is out of round. You can check them by jacking up the front end and putting a block of wood under the tire then spin the tire slowly. You can measure the distance between the tire and the wood and see how out of round it is(like a dial indicator). My experience is that once a tire is out of round 3/16 of an inch or more you will definitely feel it. It can't be fixed with weights, beads or balance techniques. Some folks on this forum have had their tires shaved to bring them back to round and a smooth ride returned.

Sometimes tires are out of round....it's when they become squares that you'll really notice a difference in the ride..they really go thump thump thump.....:B....Dennis

Run them out, of balance ,under a heavy MH and they will go out of round and cup just like other tires. Bad shocks will work over tires too.

I just replaced a Goodyear tire that had flat spots in 5 different positions. We have only owned this motorhome about 4 months now, The previous owner had a blow out and had them put the goodyear on. I don't know if it was new or used when they put it on. It was mounted on the rear. Found it when I was putting two new Toyo on the front. It had not been balanced. I had the rest of the rear tires balanced. It felt like a front tire was not balanced, but I had just had them done 1500 miles ago. Thought one of the tires had thrown a weight. Rv now rides nice and smooth.

Tires are built out of round caused by excess over lap in mold. Flat spots are caused by sitting in one spot for extended periods, drive on them they will round out. Real common in old nylon tires. Flat spots caused by turning never heard that one....guess in some conditions it could happen. If you do get a new real out of round tire have them replace it. Do not "true" or shave it. Out of round tires happen but it is not a common thing.
Back in the day truckers use to toss a few golf balls in their tires to balance them.

As far as I'm concerned, total BS. "Out of Round" is caused by parking on one spot of the tire too long...or consistant turning of the steering tires without moving. Both are "cured" by simply taking a ride. A few miles...all is well. Getting the tires warm or hot from being used is the secret.

Balancing: more and more tires shops are giving up the old-style lead weights and balancing machines for larger (RV included) tires. They throw a bag of "balance beads" in before the final mounting of the tire on the rim.
LOTS of vibrations for the first 5 miles or so...then everything smooths out as the bag brakes and the "beads" start doing their job. Balancing. I find that if I leave my RV sit for a couple months...I get the vibration for awhile, then smoothness Guess the beads fall to the bottom.

Most likely, IMO, another example of GoodYear bashing. FWIW. Zillions of these tires on the road........

I had 3 Goodyear tires separate and blow out. Goodyear knows about their problems yet will do nothing about it. Google GOODYEAR FLORIDA LAWSUIT and read about the Pasco suit and other issues. Then decide if you want to spend a dime with Goodyear.

Don't know if that's what he was talking about.

So thats how that happens!

Howdy!

Never had a problem with Goodyear but I did have problems with brand new Cooper tires being out of round and could not balance them ever. Dealer replaced them with Toyo's.

Out of round conditions are rarely caused by poor tire construction. The vast majority of what is referred to as "out of round" is caused by poor mounting.
