I have 1976 Dodge F40 motorhome and I'm trying to find out what type of transmission
fluid to use in it

Type F. But in reality any atf will work in an old slush box. However Iโ€™d stay away from synthetic and newer fluids that are high in detergents.
But you donโ€™t say whether itโ€™s a rebuild, or drain n fill or flush or just adding because itโ€™s low.
The answer could be different depending what youโ€™re adding fluid for but type F will work for all.

I would say Dexron, as it most likely has a 727 Torqueflite trans. Back then you had two choices Type F (Ford) or Dexron. You could use Type F, but you wanted a complete drain and refill. Supposedly the Type F would give you firmer shifts.

The vin number should identify the engine used, then you look up the matching transmission .
