We liked Custer's Gultch CG. A bit south of Rapid City. Good if you are doing Mammoth Hot Springs and some sights south.

As Dennis said Custer state park is nice if you can get in, Wind Cave is a NP and easier to get into during the week. It is half price if you are over 62. Don't miss Mt Rushmore at night especially if your husband is a veteran.

Rafter J Bar if you have kids, Custer SP if you don't...Dennis

The KOA in Rapid City is one of worst we ever stayed at. Watch out for the early checkin charge, the rude staff and way overpriced narrow campsites. Go south to Hermosa, It has two Passport America campgrounds that are great and still close to everything. Also has some of the best pizza close by Lintz pizza.

Another nod for the KOA. We used it as a base for about a week several years ago and it satisfied all of our needs while touring the area.

You can't get there from Ar. It's a long way from anywhere. I lived at Nisland. Thats near Deers Ears and where the Air Force has all those Silos but don't farm. Go to the Govt. Experimental Farm and you might see a pig with a giraffes neck or something! Rapid ain't that big.

Rafter J Bar is our favorite. We stay there whenever we are in the area. Stayed there for three weeks in May of 2015. Lots to see in the area.

Custer has some nice RV parks close to the start park and Rushmore with an easy drive into Rapid city. Beaver Lake campground has reasonable rates

We stayed at Rafter J in Hill City when we visited the area. It was convenient to most all the major attractions in the area. We also stayed at the KOA on the east end of town and it was fine. It really depends on where you want to be in relation to the attractions in the area.
