V10 using oil

I have a 2010 29' V10 with 10,000 miles on it. It seemed to be using oil, so I took it to the dealer. At the last oil change, I mentioned this to them. He put a mark on the dip stick and told me to come back after about 500 miles. I did, and there did not appear to be any usage. Now, after 3,000 miles, I have used 3/4 of a quart of oil. During the last 30 years of driving autos, I have never had to add oil between changes. Is this normal for the V10 to use oil?

Going to full synthetic too soon can make proper break-in take much longer. V10 really needs 10k normally to break-in, so you'll probably see it go down eventually if it is blow-by.

I don't know where this 5W40 came into the conversation, but i am using 5W20 as recommended in the manual. If i mentioned 5W40, that was in error.

It shouldn't. Last I checked ford was using semi syn anyway from the factory. On my Focus, Ford said to break it in with dino before switching to syn. I changed the oil at 1k, then 6K (I think) and after that put it on a diet of Mobil 1.

My Benz came with Mobil 1 from the factory and that's what it's been getting every 10K.

I have a 2000 excursion V10 with 87000 miles...use half a quart when towing in 5K miles. As was said change the PCV valve. Also some oils do pass the rings easier in certain engines. Had a friend that was using way too much oil in his powerstroke....turned out to be the oil. He was using Castrol...after 2nd oil change going back to Quaker State consumption stopped. And yes that 15W40 is WAYYYYYYY to heavy no matter what. I use 5W20 or 5W30 in summer

Mine requires 5W20 here in Louisiana.

If your rig is towing and working hard with a huge 30+ foot house on it's back, I think you are doing just fine. Just be sure to start with the right amount of oil after an oil change.

There is a debate on how much oil is to go in after a change. I put in 7 quarts full synthetic 5W-20, brands vary.

The reason I asked about oil was I have had 3 V10s. 02 F250 no noticeable oil consumption and sold @110,000 miles. 08 F250 @ 50,000 miles no noticeable oil consumption. New MH V10 also @ 8,000 miles and no noticeable oil consumption. I always use Ford 5W-20 oil and Ford filter. Change oil every 3500 miles. I am not a mechanic and don't know much about oil but wonder if switching to Mobile 1 had something to do with oil consumption.

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 and a Motorcraft 820s filter in 2006 V-10 and don't use any oil between changes. 3-5000 miles interval.

Excessive oil consumption in the V10 is nearly always due to a bad PVC valve. It's a $3 part, so replacing it is probably cheaper than driving to the dealer. It is easy to reach from the inside (top of the right valve cover).

Some oil consumption is normal (it is always working hard in a motorhome after all) but that much is excessive for a low mile V10.

Yikes!!!

Get that heavy oil out of there! Every V10 failure I've seen was due to running heavy oil. With the narrow passages in the Ford modular motors, it means your bottom end isn't getting oil until the oil is up to to full temp.

I have a 2002 Ford F250 SD Crew Cab with a V-10 with 90,000 miles. I have been towing a 10,000 lb. 5th wheel for years and have not and still do not use any oil in 4000 miles between oil changes!

Customer Connect is something that Dodge bought to justify oil usage on their cars so they can use it to get out of warranty work. It has NOTHING to do with oil usage in any Ford engine. It is Dodge hype!
Look it up on Google, it has NO official authority or backing! It is useless B.S. Just where is this so called "Industry Standard" originating from?
