Vanity sink drains into black tank

Curious here, Just realized that one of our vanity/bathroom sinks drain into the black tank. Pulled out the Manual and it appears to have been an option. Not a problem now that I know when dry camping not to dump too much sink water down the toilet :S Has anyone ever heard of this ??

We sold " HIS" year Mandalay and I have been in the business for 40 years. I have NEVER seen an "Option" to reroute gray plumbing to the black tank. This may be true of some oddball brand motorhomes, but it is NOT an Industry common practice or option. The problem is, some so called experts(Salesman and such) when questioned WHY the sink is routed to the black tank, spout off some nonsense about options or making sure more water gets to the Black tank. Because they are afraid the customer might be upset with the truth. Doug

No need to get into a pissing match but it is what it is and I'm happy with it. This is not some oddball brand nor are we idiots that just believe what some salesman or "Manual Says". Thanks to all others for your input. This is a great feature since we boondock a lot and have 120 gal. of fresh water. Grey tank fills up much quicker. Happy Camping to all 🙂
P.S. Doug....His is a Her 😉

I talked to the folks at Winnebago about this while at Forest City. They said it was done because people were not using enough water when flushing. sounds like a good idea to me.

Do you know the reason for this routing? Is it just to save money?

Many campers do not flush with enough water so this routing could help the black tank.

I personally am happy ours is routed that way.

It is NOT to get more water into the black tank. It is because the floorplan design does not leave any room to run that particular sink drain plumbing to the Gray tank, so they route that sink to the black tank. There is NO rule or Law that states ONLY Black Water can go to the Black Tank. Doug

Well, the OP said it was an option on his coach, so it appears that at least Mandalay can run the drain to either tank.

What truth!!!!! If the bathroom sink drains in to the black tank, so what?? We never hook up to sewer until our tanks are full and I find that with our Monaco coach, where the bath sink drains in to the black tank, it works fine. Both tanks seem to be balanced pretty well and seem to run about the same levels. I mean if it is going to be a big problem for some, just use the facilities at the RV park. I find that the design works fine on our coach. As far as I am concerned, those rigs that do not run the bath sink in to the black tank are plumbed wrong.

If this was directed at me note, that I never said it is not done. It is done if the sink cannot be routed to the gray tank. As to the "manual". The Manual has NOTHING to do with options. If the manual states that there may be a sink routed to the black, that is because when they wrote the manual, they were aware that some sinks might be plumbed to the black tank. That does NOT mean it was an "Option". I have been involved in RV's for 40 years. Built them for 5 and serviced them for 35. I have NEVER seen a OPTION to route a sink plumbing. Doug

Our Travel Supreme has this option. I find no advantage whatsoever to dumping the sink into the black tank. I actually wish it didn't do that since I need to dump the black more often, while the gray is left open during FHU.

If all you do is weekend or week camping then it is no big deal. We'll setup for a couple of months during the winter in a FHU park. Would be nice to be able to run the bathroom sink without conserving water.

IMO that poo pyramid occurs mostly to those that have a leaking black waste tank valve. They're connected to the sewer, and never realize that they are slowly loosing fluid leaving only the solids behind.

One of the problems many have is the famous Poop Pyrimid that reduces the capacity of the black tank.

The solution is to add more water to the black tank.

My sister-in-law and her husband have that setup on their Chateau Sport MH. They have 4 kids and don't find it too convenient as it fills the black water tank pretty quick.

We also have that feature - great idea in our opinion. This way the grey tank does not fill as quickly and black tank nearly empty. It just helps even out the levels.
