What's a reasonable towed vehicle?

New to Class C, come from towing 5th wheel. One disadvantage is loosing the ability to simply unhook and use the truck to go exploring so I'm looking for something to tow behind.
I have a 2014 E450 with the Ford V-10. Not going to buy a Grand Cherokee so I'm looking for a reasonably priced something to tow.

I flat towed a 2002 5 speed Corolla for 100k and it was a great tow car and DD, 40 mpgs on the hi way. If I were to buy another today I would get the new Ford Escape hybrid which is flat towable and averages 42 mpg and would also make a good DD when not towing.

Buy a dolly and you can tow anything that is front wheel drive and many that are rear or AWD. I tow a Smart car which is rear wheel drive but can be towed 4 down or on a dolly just by putting it in neutral. I can load or unload in 5 min and I am 80 YO.

I towed a Honda CRV. I would totally do that again.

If you are looking for something cheaper than the jeeps, and still want 4wd/awd consider the Chevy Equinox. 2012 -2017 4wd models are mostly towable 4 flat and weigh under 4000 lbs.

I bought a used 2015 Jeep Wrangler 2dr automatic. It is great to tow, fun to drive (even as a daily driver). Tow it with my 2016 MH with Ford V10. No issues what so ever.

When we went to a C, we bought a 20 year old TJ Wrangler. Easily towed flat / 4 down. As MDK said, even though his is newer Wrangler, no fuses, no special anything. Hook up, XSFR case in N, transmission in P, and off we go.

Fast forward to late 2020, and with a kid heading to college many hours from home, she needed a more reliable car (she had a 25 year old buick). No, we did not give her the Jeep; we sold the Jeep outright, as well as the Buick, and got her a Corolla using that money and savings to avoid payments.

Point is, we miss the Jeep, but now my wife drives behind me in her Subaru...I miss the ability to flat tow, but it has worked well having her tag along behind. Since we are only doing big RV trips about 4 to 5 weeks a year, this works. Rest of time are small local trips anyway.

The new Ford Ranger is towable 4 wheels down. Nice truck. Reasonable size.

With all due respect, "reasonably priced" and :not going to buy a Grand Cherokee" (there are many reasonably priced used JGCs, in fact, the older ones are on the cheaper end of the spectrum compared to similar SUVs) are not very defining terms in what you're looking for.

This is a completely open ended question.

On the upside, your options are numerous depending on budget, type of vehicle preference and intended use of the vehicle (when it's not being towed).

Try adding information like:
Budget
miles
new/used
vehicle type (car, suv, jeep, pickup)
intended use (daily driver primarily, off road capable, etc)

I pull a 2016 Wrangler JKU with a Blue Ox tow package. 4 down, easy to tow, no locking steering, or fuses to pull, or other special needs. Transmission in P, and transfer case in N, and off you go. 1/4 tank of gas to keep the weight down, and under the GCWR of 15250 lbs.
Mike. Comments are anecdotal or personal opinions, and worth what you paid for them.
