What toad is small enough to carry on the back of a Class A?

Okay so here is the question. We bought our first "monster" (to us) 32' Class A Motorhome. We could tow our son's car that we acquire in a week, but we are already overwhelmed a little with getting comfy with the 32'. (Formerly a TT owner.)

What kind of vehicle is "street worthy," if that is the best term... that is TINY? I wish we could mount something on the back of the MH. I have a feeling you guys are laughing now, but I'm serious. Is there any kind of tiny electric car or anything that we could use on regular roads? Usually we just run a couple of miles ... down to right across the street, to and from a campsite to a Nascar track. But also sometimes from a parking lot to a music venue.

Wish it could be a little golf cart, but are they allowed on city streets? I'd think not, but not sure. They are all over Nascar tracks, but I've also heard they are only allowed for the owner/drivers... and I've read some track rules that say NO GOLF CARTS ALLOWED AT ALL! Hmmm.

We have a small car... a Volks GTI that we could tow... but that adds so much length, when we are already not acclimated to the new length. Looked at a car trailer, but that's really long. I guess if we do the GTI, it will have to be a Tow Dolly. But I'm hoping there is some nifty little car that we can attach to the back of the Class A and go. D

I'm a Dreamer, right????

Thanks, as always for your kind replies. I'm really trying here and hit a dead end.

I suspect you can tow up to 5000 as that is the max weight of most hitches on a gasser. Having said that, you have a lot of options. You do not need to go with the smallest or lightest. You do need to know your weight limits.

OP said carry a small car, not tow.

We tow a 2008 Smart Car behind our 34' RV without any problems. The car is about 1800 lbs. & tow bar/car base plate is about 70 lbs. We bought this used 08 Smart Car a year ago here in Canada for $6500 with only 30,000 miles on it, with A/C and panorama roof, accident free. I would think similar ones would be at a similar price in the US if you shop around. By the way, crash test ratings on these car are quite good. I installed the base plate myself(goes behind front bumper cover to connect tow bar to). Blue Ox tow bar/base plate was purchased new on Amazon.com for much less that at our local dealer.

Look around . You may find a good Smart in the 7 grand area. 2008 or 9. It is what you want. Check out threads on towing Smart car.

The smallest and lightest in weight car that I've towed behind my motorhome was a Toyota Yaris. I towed it all 4 down and the year and model I had weighed a little over 2,000 lbs.

We're here at the Quartzsite rv show in Az. I've seen two smart cars being carried by lifts on the back of 40 ft Class A rv's with tag axles. There is a vendor here selling one. I'll try and take a picture of one when I see it again. The smart car is being carried sideways much like you see motorcycles being carried.

The OP does not have a 40' motorhome with a tag axle.

Even if he did, just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Can you image the engineer when they find out that somebody cantilevers an extra ton off the back of their DOT approved RV design. :S

Unfortunately the tounge weight of some of the big trailers these guys pull run upwards of 1500 pounds. You can buckle the frame of a diesel if you try hard enough, and the ones that do invariably pulled a trailer with a car in it.

You can not carry any car on the back of that motorhome. You can tow a small car like a Smart car, but not carry one.

You would not even be able to carry a big motorcycle much less a car. Sorry!

The first thing I would do is verify the rating of your receiver. Ours was only rated at 3500 lbs. We also tow a Chevy HHR. When we first bought our first motor home, it was a 35 foot. It will not take you long to be comfortable driving it. When towing a car it pretty much follows the rv. Just remember to go a little bit farther before you start your turn and watch your mirror.

Ivylog, Have you noticed any unusual tire wear in what I would consider "reverse"? I would think that camber and caster would be off towing backwards.

have not gotten off the toad subject, but humor me here. You can tell the motorhome we just bought was wrecked from the picture that I posted that is kind of squashed & a little skewed?
we had a certified RV mechanic inspect it. He said nothing about that.

Dennis was joking. If I'm following his humor, he is saying the back of the Smart Car is so flat on the back and short that it looks like it's been hit (squashed).
