Dollar Store Food Bargains - Pie Recipe

OK, I admit it, I love to shop at the Dollar Store for stuff! I was always kind of Leary to buy any food items, but I am over that now.

So recently I have been buying canned pie filling and Graham cracker pie crust at the Dollar Store. I buy, lemon, keylime, banana and I even tried the apple with this recipe!

At my local grocery store I buy an 8 oz package of cream cheese and a 16oz tub of Cool Whip.

This recipe makes two pies.

Soften the cream cheese to room temperature. This is a very important step, do not skip!

Beat the soften cream cheese, then beat in 1 can of pie filling, your choice. Mix well. If using a fruit pie filling like apple beat mixture until fruit is well incorporated and in small bits.

Fold about half of the defrosted Cool Whip into the filling mixture. Divide mixture in half and pour into and spread between the two Graham cracker crust. Divide remaining Cool Whip between the two pies and spread evenly over top of filling. Refrigerate two hours prior to serving. Enjoy!

Of course, you could always buy all the ingredients at the grocery store and not the Dollar Store if you prefer. Either way, this Creamy Cheese Pie is really GOOD!

What bargains are you buying at the Dollar Store?

There is a difference between a Dollar Store and Dollar General. We have a Dollar General in our little town and it is more like a small WalMart. They have their own label foods and major brands as well. It is not an everything is a dollar store. I love their greeting cards and their store brand food items have been fine. Not all of their prices are as low as WalMart, you have to know what is a bargain and what might not be. Their spices have been great, not like the ones at the Dollar Tree stores. I won't go near a Family Dollar store.

I don't buy Dollar Store spices anymore after I accidently spilled a lot of their black pepper on food. I found out it had no strength. Then I bought cinnamon and chili powder at a food coop and compared it to the same I had at home from the $ store and found the $ store stuff was weak so I decided I was not buying spice there anymore. Just sayin'.

The dollar store sells a lot of brands that you might never heard of before. The well known brands spend a lot of money advertising their goods and that's past down to the consumer.

And like a lot of the big box stores, the Dollar Store buys in big volume.

I am sure that the Dollar Store doesn't make a big profit on some things, but they make a big profit on a lot of things!

I know that I have been sucked into buying "stuff" that I don't need, but what the heck, it was only a dollar! It all adds up though.

I always wonder how much stuff (perishable) the regular stores have to throw away.

Dollar Stores are fine. Just check the dates on things.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again. If one of those dollar stores ever blows up, it will be a full-sized WalMart. They have everything you could possibly need, and even the smallest of Texas towns seem to have them. Seeing one as I pull into a strange area near a park I am visiting for the first time is really comforting. I never have to worry about forgetting to pack something.

I'm a sucker for the $1 spices. Garlic powder and onion powder specifically and others when I feel daring.

In the Foothills of Yuma there is a 99 cent store that is quite big and has a great variety of things including fresh fruit, bakery items and produce. You do have to watch expiry dates but it is always my favorite place to stop before I hit Walmart for my weekly shopping trip.

No Dollar/General/any of em stores anywhere near me but the women of another forum I frequent talk about it allll the time:).

As well I'm basically a perimeter shopper for a variety of reasons so my processed food buys are pretty limited. Do enjoy Ocean State Job Lot when I get further North though. In fact I'm in the process of making iced tea mixed with a bottle of Knudsen's black cherry juice I bought at Ocean.

Basically the recipe is 2 parts iced tea to 1 part juice of your preference. Add sugar syrup to taste, lots of ice and serve.

Hi,

I find the pancake mix is a great bargain. It seems to be excellent and is actually cheaper than making up the mix from ingredients.

Crushed garlic is another bargain, as are many of the cleaning products. Cerials tend to come in small boxes which are perfect for an RV.

We live in a town of 500+, next to one of 1500+ and Dollar General is building a store here. It took everyone by surprise given the fact there are only 2 small mini marts in the area. We have been shopping at one 4 miles from us.
I guess they know something?
But to answer your question I can't give specifics, but we do check them often for many things. Walmart being 10 miles away with $3.40 gas makes us look harder.
