Grill Re-Model for Full timing

Has anyone modified their large patio grill to be taken along full timing? How has it worked out for you? What modifications did you make to make it more useful?

I am thinking of taking my large 4 burner Charbroil Grill, taking it off it's stand and removing the side tables so I can use it on the road.

I am not impressed by the little portable grills I see at CW and elsewhere.

As for hauling it and storing it I will put it on the carrier at the back of my trailer next to my Generator.

Let me try to clarify my original question a bit. I am afraid I left it a bit too general.

I am hoping someone who has taken their full sized Grill from home with them on the road will comment and talk about how they use it and are they happy with the decision, have they experienced any issues, and of course I m curious about how they carry them, although I have a plan for mine.

While I am open to any and all comments those that directly address this question will be especially appreciated.

On the other hand if the OP feels he has to have it tying it atop the roof or behind in a trailer makes really good sense.

Currently, I'm in divesting mode so this could affect my opinion;).

Not to totally side track you, but here goes.

I am struggling with the same problem. I have fired up two portables at times just to get the job done. No more. I am looking and here is where I am leaning.

I am thinking about getting a Camp Chef 3-burner stove. Each burner is 30,000 BTUs.

3-burner stoves

They make accessaries to go on top. They have a 2-burner wide grill top or a 3-burner wide. They also have griddles in different sizes. Also available, but not on my list, is a pizza oven.

Stove Accessaries

I think the whole kit would store easily in one of my compartments. For your situation, storage bags are available and you could put it on the back rack. I think I had room in my former TT storage bay for it. Specially if I didn't have the two portables.

It sounds like you are ready to scrap a home patio grill. So, will you have to buy a replacement of the house? Maybe keep it for home and dive into this.

I am stuck, because my home grill is shot. It would be perfect for your plan. The top is great. The stand and doors are shot. Right now a brick holds up one corner because a wheel fell off from the from rust.

My problem is I am going to be buying for both home and RV soon-ouch!

I think your plan to hall it on the back is OK. Check the internal parts before each use and you're good to go. They might wear out or get damaged from a little more bouncing than, say, being transported in a storage compartment.

Securing it is not a problem for me. I can do that. (about 7 years ago I crossed the Pacific Ocean in my 42 foot sailboat with larger stuff tied to the deck and it all made it just fine and there is nothing my trailer can do short of tipping over that will come close to the forces the pacific has to offer)

OK folks, don't tell him what you think he should do. He's given this thought and he wants more grilling space! Sounds like you've decided to just use the "working" part of the grill and what you need is a way to raise it high enough so you're safely above whatever table/base you are going to put it on. What about a metal folding table large enough to give you a base. Many of these are available and some are foldable as well. Just a thought.

Thank You so much for saying what I really wanted to say but kept my peace.

And yes you have it right I will remove the "wing" tables on each side and the entire bottom assy which is basically the legs and stand/wheels.

I already have the Hitch with the "basket" in which will also go my generator securely bolted down inside a weatherproof container. There is room for both.

I am intrigued by the suggestion of another poster to just not modify it and keep it whole. Tying it down is not an issue for me. I can do that. I was just trying to save a bit of weight.

The small grills will just not work for me and my preferences of grilling. I need the bigger cooking area and the heat I can get from 4 big burners. But thanks to all those that suggested I go another direction...I know you meant well.

X2 on getting a cargo rack for your hitch to haul it. Most of those racks will hold 500#. I've seen other campers with their full size grill on a hitch rack on their motorhomes. I'd be reluctant to mess with modifying the grill because it might destroy its ability to function properly.

You could probably take it off the stand and then build a small stand out of unistrut, just enough to keep it from heating table to much.

They will keep trying to force him to get a weber q? Seen these post before, instead of a answer they try and push what they like.

Instead of modifying the grill, get a cargo rack that fits onto your hitch and securely strap the grill to the hitch rack and your rig. Take the entire grill with you. You can get one with a ramp to roll it onto the rack.
Here are some examples of hitch racks with ramps

I have seen other people with large grills on cargo racks. I am sure it can be done. Just have to do a little modification. As you can see most people don't do that but more power to you if that's what you want.

How big a grill do you need? If you want portability, you will have to give up some cooking area.

Here's a big one however, with roughly 400 square inches of cooking area: #3200 Q

I have used a Baby Q 200, with about 200 square inches of cooking area for 9 years, and never had space issues when cooking for three adults.

Good Luck in your quest.

That is precisely what I do not want, a small portable. It is not sufficient for the kind of cooking I do on a grill. This is why I want my full size one and will modify it.

Has anyone done that?

Once you start using the Weber Q, there is a good chance you will also buy one for your house. They are that good.

Best grill I have ever owned, bar none.
