I'm really surprised at the reaction you received. If you work with these people they know you, I would think it's a nice gift. Better then a stupid cologne or bath set from Walmart picked up last minute or re-gifted with no thought. Have any of these people eaten fast food before? Go in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant and see what goes on. You wouldn't eat out again! I know my friends and co-workers well, that I know one doesn't like chocolate, one can't have nuts etc. My daughter has a child who she is nursing and has allergies she is on the MSPI diet for the child. But the rest of her family is fine. She would simply say thank you and give it to guests or other family members. She doesn't expect everyone to know what she can have and not. I don't buy baked goods at a bake sale because I don't know where they have come from, I just give them money.
I had a friend give me lots of zucchini this summer that I froze from her garden. I'm making her zucchini bread. Go ahead and bake. You don't have to know if they throw it out or not. Same if you gave them a store bought gift you never know if they re-gift or not.
