Potato Bombs

I came across a site on the internet for potato bombs and because I had never heard of a potato bomb before, I thought I would try it. It turned out to be the biggest hit of the camping trip.

Take a large baking potato and core it with an apple corer. Plug one end with a piece of the core and then stuff it with what ever you like - cheese, sausage, ham, lunch meats, onions, butter, the list is endless. Wrap it with bacon and then plug the other end with the rest of the core. Wrap in aluminum foil and bake until done. They can be baked in the coals of a camp fire, on the grill, in the oven, any way you like. Served with some sour cream or butter on the side, they are a meal all by them selves.

While we tried various combinations of stuffings, our favorite turned out to be breakfast sausage with onions and cheese on the top.

I have done these by the recipe. And they are really good just like the recipe says, but......I am a meat eater. I like meat and potatoes for any meal.

I half cooked the potatoes, split in half lengthwise, hollowed out each side of the taters. Stuffed with (your favorite stuff), put the halves back together, wrap with bacon, and slow cook on the edge of the smoker, or grill indirect heat. It is a good recipe, but I only changed it for my taste.

I've seen videos of them and questioned whether a 3/4" dia. void was enough to get any appreciable stuffing in a large potato. All the same ingredients on a twice baked potato seemed like it would be more rewarding. Did you make these as a side or as a meal?

I tend to agree with you. I can see why people might want to try it but it is a bit of a gimmick. I would cut an opening in the side, hollow out a bit more of the potato and then fill the void with whatever I want. Wrap it in foil and bake/grill as noted.
No person is completely worthless ... one can always serve as a bad example.

Those sound great, will have to try those. We're hitting our stride so to speak and we're often looking for something smaller for meals and these sound like they would do that.

"Pork Chops on a Stick": Pork loin sliced into chops. Half inch wooden dowels, cut into sticks. Sharpen with a pencil sharpener and stick into side of chops. Marinate or season to taste. Grill & Enjoy!

Never cored a potatoe. South of the border they just cut them in half and dress them. Even Costco carries them. We call them Pappas & of coarse with beer. Just order up Papas & beer.

Thanks for the great recipe. I now know what our first breakfast will be the next time we are out camping. I'm wondering if more filled holes will give more flavour or if when the potato is cooked you move it to a casserole dish and add a scrambled egg mixture and cook a little longer till the egg is done. My taste buds are acting like bombs now.

Based on the thread title, you can bet that Homeland Security will be looking at this thread!

x2! Thought the same thing from the subject line!

Here is what OTHER people do with a potato.
They use a cannon or gun instead of an oven! Apparently considered a sport by some!:B

That was my first thought too, I remember those spud guns. We stuffed a cherry bomb in a hollowed out potato and threw it like a grenade but that is a subject for another thread.:B
