$130.00 For 4GM RAM?

That's what CRUCIAL quoted me for a pair of 2GB chips for that 8 -year old Gateway laptop. Without looking too hard I found the same number on an eBay site who confirmed it's the correct RAM for that computer.

Thirty three dollars free shipping no tax for both chips. I've got to do something quick tomorrow as a driver is going 750 miles north next Friday and will go to my PO Box the following Tuesday. If I squeeze for the Crucial RAM- no hard drive limited now to 70+ GB disk.

" EIGHT gigs (Original chip was 2) So I now have five times the memory"

your math is off... 8/2=4x

unless you had an empty slot for the 8gig
so its 8+2=10gigs

you know you need to clarify this stuff, when you post
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

It's the law of supply and demand, when the demand for something is greater than the supply, the price goes up, when the demand is less than the supply the price goes down. Right now there are lots of mfrs producing DDR3 RAM which makes it so the supply is higher than the demand, however, no mfrs are making DDR2 RAM so ANY demand pushes the price up.

Obsolete just like the laptop's future owner. My Medicare's total RAM cost is awesome.

Well the laptop is 750-miles from here and Crucial seemed to dump the RAM purchase from it's shopping cart.

Doesn't make sense why obsolete stuff costs a fortune. Unless of course if the Hog Trough factor is excluded.

older ram always costs more, depends on type too ... 2GB is a big module for ddr1 (128-512mb typical), and pretty big for ddr2 (256-1gb typ). ddr3 brought 1-4gb modules down into the "cheap" rangel but 8,16,32 are still pricey.

anything less than ddr3 is not in production anymore, so as inventory drops prices increase. even ddr3 is seeing limited production, retooling is going on right now to make nand flash chips (storage) instead of dram chips.

I mentioned this in another thread of yours. More than likely the memory for your old laptop is DDR2 which isn't very high in demand anymore so is very expensive compared with the much more common DDR3 RAM most currently shipping computers are using.

Crucial has a good tool to tell you what RAM to buy but their prices aren't necessarily the most competitive so use the specs of the RAM Crucial specified and shop elsewhere for a better price.

Doesn't Crucial still have their online tool that identifies the correct RAM needed? They used to have one!

I don't know what memory your Gateway laptop needs. As a similar example using my 8 year old Dell laptop, most 4 gB choices from Newegg are between $40 and $60. This is for two 2 gB modules. Newegg has a memory finder that you can plug your make/model into.

The $130. for 2-2GB modules doesn't sound right. Even if discontinued.

Post the exact model number of the Gateway.
This is what I was afraid of.
It could be that the memory for that thing has become insanely expensive.

But *post* the model.

In general, you'll pay the most buying direct from a memory(module) manufacturer. I tend to only use their online PC/Mac memory guide, then buy from Newegg, or Microcenter if they have it in stock.

What Gateway laptop model do you have?
