Something keeps updating and using data allowance on this Wdws8 program - I think it might be "Bing' ... and I've deleted it a couple times but it keeps coming back.

I'd like to uninstall it completely - which I thought I did, but seems not - because sometimes it pops up when I'm searching. Can anyone tell me where it is located, so I can uninstall it totally.

It's Toshiba laptop with Windows8 ... I go to uninstall on the control panel, but BING is not there?

Not positive this is taking my data allowance - but something is updating too frequently and using double my allowance in a month.

Any suggestions what it might be (if not Bing)- I've shut off all I can find and know about. But used 9G last month instead of under 5G, my normal amount (usually 3G-4G).

A hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive. You can format it and load anything you want on it. The problem may be the other hardware in the computer which may not have Win 7 drivers available to talk to the operating system.

I know enough to know that I shouldn't attempt it ... so am taking LT to my SIL techie on Turkey Day so he can load it and set it up. I always know just enough to try it, but often not enough to succeed in some of the computer issues.

That much I'm sure of, I've already got a Ph.D in "getting help" ๐Ÿ™‚

The expense is non-relevant at this point - I made a huge mistake buying the new LT with Wdw8 on it ... so, am paying for that both in time, in hassle, and in 'overage' data use on Hotspot.

BTW: For those following the "data over-use" issue with Hotspot, I called the Verizon tech today, again. First question he asked - "Did you recently buy a Windows8 PC" ... so, that tells me something. And, Wdw7 here we come again.

Please let us know how the install of Win 7 over Win 8 goes.

I have been told that many Win 8 machines will refuse to run under Win 7. Something about drivers that will only work under Win 8.

There were a few other issues but, I've slept since then. Some pesky hardware issues.

But, please let us know, by PM if you wish, of your success.

Personally, I have a Win 8 machine that I'd like to run as Win 7. I just don't want to be a guinea pig.

Thanks.

That way you can choose to download them when you are connected by some means other than limited bandwidth. I personally don't care for my computers doing anything without my knowledge.
AMEN! If you're not willing to control your machine, they'll happily do it for you. Just don't think you'll have anything that's usable or efficient. It's called personal responsibility, and if you're not willing to take the time to learn how to do it, you'll continue to have problems.

Quote tkcas01 - Yes, I've already done that - and it does tell me. But, then other things over-ride it, or I don't shut everything off, only the things I can find ... I'm certainly not as tech-smart as the guys that write these things for a living, and while I'm doing other things in life, they keep at it and outsmart me.

And,Pigman1 - thanks for nothing - if you can't offer something productive, instead of insulting, please post somewhere else. A little quick to judge what's usable or efficient for someone else, aren't you?

Not every person in the world can learn all it takes to have these tech battles - and as soon as I learn one, it becomes obsolete and I get hit with another one - all I'm asking is for these sneaking vultures to leave my LT alone - quit sneaking around sticking things in it I don't want, and using up my bandwidth without permission.

Monkey, if you're concerned about Live Tiles or other apps using up your 4G connectivity with W8.1, choose Settings, Change PC settings, Network, and click on the Verizon 4G network icon. Then, set Metered Connection to On.

That will automatically tell W8.1 to throttle automatic downloads while still permitting normal PC usage.

The definition of a "metered connection" is one which has a charge per unit and a maximum limit before overage charges apply. That's what your VZN 4G sounds like.

Good luck!

Yeah - you're kinda right - but it's a 4G data device (Not W8.1) unless that's part of the data device. I can never figure it all out - even when I think I have, it fools me again ๐Ÿ™‚

Will solve this problem permanently next week with a new Windows7 install on a clean HD in this LT ... I know, I know - Windows8 is great!! But only for those that like it. I spent the time learning Windows7, I like it - and I have two other LT's with Windows7, I like it, I like it ๐Ÿ™‚ - so, will go back to it.

Hopefully, when we do this new install - the 'tags' that allow all this other******into my LT without truly asking me will disappear and the 'sneak it in' will stop.

Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I'd sure rather have only what "I" choose not what others sneak in. Seems to me, if they have a product that is TRULY GREAT, they wouldn't have to sneak it in, I'd go looking for it.

That's one of the things that annoys me to no end - a company installing something I don't want (even tho I accidentally give it permission - without actually knowing it) ... So, now I have to figure out how to get rid of it, and allow my home page to come up.

I paid for the device, I pay for the service - I wish companies would stop sticking 'things' in my LT services. Not only does it annoy me, it makes me absolutely certain I'll never buy anything like it or anything it advertises, simply because it annoys me.

If you are using Win 8 the live tiles can be your source of data usage. You can right click on the active tile and there should be an option on the bottom tool bar to turn off the live tile. Not all tiles use data but if you have one with current stocks, weather etc updating, they will eat data. Even if you think they are all off, I would go through them one by one to be sure.

I guess I'm the odd man out, but I've been using Win 8.1 in the office on a 27" all in one for a couple weeks now and I really like it.

Yes, to the above - I should have said "Search engine" ...

It made itself my 'default' search engine and sometimes it came up as my home page. So, I uninstalled whatever I could find. A month or so went by, and now suddenly, a couple times, when I open my Firefox browser, BING comes up instead. Not sure if it's the home page BING, or the search engine - as I went back to my home page before I realized it - (GOOGLE is what I always use and is also my home page)

But I did uninstall BING once - at least I actually found several items in Control Panel that said BING - and uninstalled it.

And for those that comment on "go to the source" or 'google it" - I usually do that before I ask on RV.net ... but sometimes I can't figure it out even after that, so come here next. Trouble is, if what I read and apply doesn't work, I don't know if it's because I miss something, or am simply computer-stupid...

And, yes, can always get the "neighborhood kids" that know more than me at birth - and sometimes do, or the grand-kids. But, then I don't learn it for the next time.

Some have followed my turmoil with Windows8, which after six months playing with it, I still hate it. Tried to install a new Windows 7 OS over it - but Windows 8 would not let me (even when I followed RV.net assistance) But, we're home now, and next week we're going to the S-I-L, and he will install new HD or install the Windows 7 OS on this one - but, Windows 8 is gone out of my life for good pretty soon. Will make me one happy camper ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ - despite what some think about that OS.

I do require my permission to download or update as best I know - but can never be sure myself if I have all shut off -- and yes, the tiles are all shut off as far as I know.

Maybe new install with only Windows 7 and not all the junk - will stop the over data usage too ... thanks for the answers here .. once again. ๐Ÿ™‚ BD
