Dish-Pointer Pro on an Android Phone Question

Hi, I recently got a smart phone and added the Dish-Pointer Pro App.. After installation I pointed it to the southern sky and there were my Sats. (110, 119, 129) right where I expected them to be. Looking at the online manual for DPP it talks of resetting the GPS and swinging the phone in a figure-8 motion. Wondering if I just got lucky or are these setup tips not normally necessary? What are your "real world" experiences? Thank you for anything you can share, Randy

I use SatFinder. I will try the figure 8 thing when I get a chance.

Thank you for your replies! Sorry I didn't ask this originally, when you do the figure 8 are you holding the phone in the viewing position? Thank you, Randy

Hold in the face up position.

When you "saw" the sats, they may not have showed up in the exact place that they should be.That is why the calibration is needed.

If I remembe right I needed to do somewhat the same thing for the compass on my pick up when it was new.

I have the dishformyrv sat locator app on my iphone. Sometimes it also ask for the figure 8 motion to calibrate the gps.

Both Dish pointer Maps and DP AR Pro require calibration of your compass from time-to-time. When it is well-calibrated, you get less floating around (AR Pro) of the satellite positions.

Moving the phone in a figure eight is supposed to calibrate the compass and resetting the GPS and having it re-synch to the satellites can improve the accuracy. Is it needed? It probably depends on if your compass needed calibrated and how good a GPS fix you started with.

I have had occasion to use SatelliteAR, and no such swinging was required.
