End to 101 service from DIRECTV?

I inquired about having a SWM Slimline 3 installed on my motor home. I wanted to keep my Kingdome for the time being and the installer told me that it would be useless in a couple of months, because the 101, SD satellite was going off line. He wanted to just replace the dome and charge me about $800 to do it. Easy job with the power and coax already there.

That 101 being shut down was news to me so I called DTV and the technical support lady didn't know anything about this. Of coarse they only know what they're programmed to know.

I called an installer, I knew, from south Georgia. He said it was news to him also.

I'm pretty sure this is BS, but I know someone here will know the truth.

Help me understand this about SD. In my stick house, I have 2 HD and 1 SD receiver from Direct. I'm soon to get a portable sat and know that I can only receive SD with a portable from Direct. I had planned on using the Current SD as my portable receiver for the portable dish. Is this thread indicating that my soon to be portable dish be obsolete?

Yes and No.
If you go with the King Quest portable it is set up for Direct TV SD only however you can add a UC 1000 controller that will allow the King Quest to receive Dish HD.

No one on this thread knows. The guess from Solid Signal per the above link is SD will end in 2019.

Per my post above there are already some areas in the US for which there are NO SD locals only HD locals.

I wonder if that clueless Kingdome installer was confused about the upcoming encoding changes DISH Network is making to their satellite transmissions? These changes will make some older model King Domes possibly useless for DISH Network reception. That said, the original poster has DirecTV so shouldn't be any problem in the future with his King Dome.

Only one knows the truth - and that's DirecTV. ๐Ÿ™‚ Someone in accounting has a spreadsheet that's got the actual date.

Agreed that it's inevitable. If nothing else, 101 will die when the satellite itself splashes back to earth.

That Solid Signal blog has a guess of 2019 for DTV to drop SD.
