Firefox is a Memory Hog (150+mb)

It is the latest version. We have been monitoring via Task Mngr. We have win-8. Does anyone else experience this? Know of an easy fix?

Not at all- the flash memory used in SSD drives have a finite number of read/write cycles. They are fast, but they do wear out.

Nowadays RAM is cheap.
Running things in RAM saves wear and tear from your hard drives, especially SSD.
I put caches, temporary files in RAM and my PC run much faster. Once I opened 20+ tabs in both Firefox, Chrome and never managed to hit 4G RAM.

Your SSD is basically memory modules just like RAM, how is that saving wear and tear on something that has no moving parts???

It can depend on which and how many extensions you have installed, all of which use memory. Or if you're running any media in your browser, such as flash content or movies. Your memory usage can jump.

My Firefox is currently using 340M of memory.

Windows 7 had a complete re-engineer of its memory management. And more tweaks were done with Windows 8. Inactive programs not being used get pushed to the background and while they are allocated the memory shown in Task Manager, they aren't actually using it until they are brought back to the front.

How is your PC running? Is it sluggish? Are mouse movements jerky? If its running fine, I wouldn't "task watch". Just use it and enjoy it.

433 meg for my FF. So what. It's my "daily driver" and I have lots of ram.

All I know is i used to use MS IE and it would lock up on me two or three times a day. Went to FIREFOX and it just keeps running smooth for me. I tried to use CHROME which I really like but it was always having some issues so finally just went back to FIREFOX...

I'm running DUAL SCREENs here so have to say I probably made a WIN 8 machine out of my XP PRO as I have several TABS opened all the time haha...

Yes, Firefox is a memory hog, but it isn't as bad as it used to be. Mine is sitting at 300 meg. but I do have 7 tabs open. They have fixed the worst of the memory leaks so at least it doesn't lock up like it used to.

Seems I read once that memory leaks are caused by poorly, or sloppily, written code. Dunno, I've never coded any to speak of.

I'm running 26.0 at work and it's using about 111 mb - 180 mb or so, but I expect that less than 200 mb is decent considering the addins I run.

I have IE 8 on this machine and currently it's using anywhere from 64 - 98 mb.

Question: are you concerned about your memory usage? Memory isn't static, it fluctuates as you open and close applications. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are both much better at memory management than the old operating systems.

To me 150 megabytes is nothing. I'm currently using 3.27 gigabytes of memory with a lot of things open and my computer is still functioning fine.

Unless you have a total of 2 gigabytes of physical memory you should be ok.

I don't find 150mb to be a "hog" given the level of bloat in todays apps. Do you have plugins installed for firefox, like adobe reader, flash, etc.?

Under win7 here, firefox with 1 tab open (gmail) is at 176mb, chrome (various threads) at over 400mb and skype at 105mb.

Out of 32gb ram, I have 27gb "available" and 19gb "free"
