Is Directv stopping SD and what to do?

My friend and I were out with our MH's this . past week The camper in the next site told us that Directv was ending their SD service next month. My buddy with Direcdtv has an older 2004 Southwind with the older style crankup dish with the older style SD receiver and the original analog TV. The system works fine for him, but if the news is true, He's going to have to invest in new equipment. He tried calling Directv and couldn't get thru to anyone with information. Has anyone heard about them ending SD and any suggestions what to do? He's not going to spend $1,200 on a dish.

So I guess my buddy will just wait and see what Directv does. Perhaps they will send him a new HD receiver or maybe he will have to sign up for the maintenance for a month. Then he will have to get a digital to analog converter.

Big K, does Dish allow you to watch more than one tv on different channels in the RV? and how many "boxes" is required?

The X2 has two outputs, one sat box reqd per output.

Primary box can watch any channel any sat

Second box can only watch channels on the sat the pri is watching.

We’ve never hooked up a second box.

Darn hard to watch SD after HD.

HD at home is the way I've done it since the inception of HD....the MH was never that important and SD was fine and still would be but if SAT 101 will be broadcasting HD and I can still use both my old roof top dishes(King Dome and Datron) to get the new signals...upgrading to an HD receiver in the MH is a no brainer. The TV's I have in MH are already HD and Must admit that when watching OTA HD broadcasts and then switching to SD Sat in the past, the difference is quite stunning.

Best case scenario would be if Directv sends him an HD receiver free and he only has to buy a digital to analog convert. Then hope all the channels are still available when it's switched.
If he's that dead set on not watching HD.

His 04 Southwind has a built in Magnavox up front. Changing it to HD would mean doing woodwork and I don't think he wants to do that. I would, I have offered to. They have 4 HD TVs at home.

BTW, I have Dish in my MH with a Vip211 receiver that I move from my house to the MH and have a Winegard Pathway X1 which woks great off my 400watt inverter. The X1 sat has 2 connections for another receiver, but we only have the living area one connected a HDMI cable running out to the outdoor TV if I want sat out there. Just need to change HDMI cables to receiver.
But getting back to my friend, His old receiver shows sat 101W on the screen and I'm sure his old dish can only get one sat at a time. Best case scenario would be if Directv sends him an HD receiver free and he only has to buy a digital to analog convert. Then hope all the channels are still available when it's switched.

I dropped DTV and switched to DISH with a Winegard Pathway auto align carry out.

HD and click of a button. DISH is way more RV friendly.

I'm almost thinking DIRECTV really is pushing their ON-LINE service using AT&T... You can downstream their TV programs over the internet now... SAT DISH not needed anymore... We get info from them all the time wanting us to join up again... $50 a month and use the internet to view the channels... This is pure TV anywhere now haha... You have to connect to the internet however from the RV...

I can't imagine trying to stream TV from the wifi service at most campgrounds. Sometimes it's hard enough to check email lol

Bottom line is he can just wait and see what happens. Sounds like he can just get new HD receiver and install and digital to analog converter

Doubtful. He may have to learn to manually set up a dish on a tripod. About $150. And deep six the tube tv.

Will his old old crankup dish be able to receive HD? My Dishnetwork at home had to have the roof top dish replaced with a larger one because of all the satellites. Is Directv different? If so, then maybe Directv will send him a new HD receiver and he's able to keep his existing system.

My understanding is we will need to get new receivers. We will still be able to get SD.

At this point you don't need to do anything. The latest information from DirecTV is that they will not end SD service until early 2020.
While you will need an HD receiver when this change happens, your current antenna (or dome) will be able to receive HD programming. What is currently unknown is which channels will be broadcast from the 101 satellite but there's still plenty of time to find out.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?
