Linux Ubuntu problem

BarneyS

I run Ubuntu on one of my laptops. Recently, an "update" came through and when it was done, my laptop WiFi was gone. I have no signal indicator at the top and I cannot connect to my router any longer to get online. Now there is no way to fix the problem via an update or other download. Anybody have suggestions.

I have already tried to use Windows to download the latest version but it will not install, probably due to the older version already being installed. Also, I cannot find any way to uninstall Ubuntu. Anybody know how? Keep in mind that I am not an expert in either computers or especially Linux.
Thank you.

Didn't realize you were using a dual-boot environment? Which can sometimes cause problems with OS upgrades.

As I mentioned, I'm not familiar with Ubuntu. However, I would check to make sure your specific WiFi adapter is enabled using Ifconfig? I believe Ubuntu should do this automatically? But still wondering if the upgrade disabled the specific network adapter?

CentOS, which I'm more familiar and just basically a free version of Red Hat Linux Enterprise, does not enable network adapters by default. No wifi or ethernet. You have to manually enable the adapter(s), or else modify the specific script option to "onboot=on" to avoid having to do so upon startup each time.

Not what you asked about, just want to throw this in. I tried ubuntu for a while and didn't like it a whole lot. Switched to mint cinnamon 17.3 and like it much better just because the GUI is pretty close to the windows gui. If you're not familiar with it, you will also want to get grub customizer (for either mint or ubuntu), which IMO should be a standard part of the system. You can burn a bootable DVD of mint and boot without installing it to try it out.

Thanks Chris and all the others who made suggestions. I have given up and used my system restore disks to put the computer back to factory original. That went fine and now am installing Windows 7. t Then will try my backup that I made some time ago. It should have most of my programs and settings on it. If not, I have a lot of work to do yet installing all the programs. I am not going to install all of them though. There were a lot on there that I never used.

Just waiting now for Windows 7 to finish installing and then I can get to work again. Has been a long day on the computer! I am going to keep this little netbook that I am using now on Ubuntu, but not going to put it on the laptop again.
Thanks again for all the help. ๐Ÿ™‚

For kicks try:
sudo service network-manager start
and see what happens:)

Got home and tried all of the suggestions given. Not much luck!:(

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. It is on a Toshiba L305 64 bit, running Windows 7 Home Edition with Ubuntu as an optional boot.
Using Windows right now to get online.

Chris:
I tried both of your suggestions and could not decipher the results. Here is what came up on the screen. Perhaps you can explain them?

Results of Chris Bryant suggestions:

You could also try just running network manager- you should be able to search and find it. If not, try opening a terminal and running either:
nm-applet

or

nm-connection-editor

should open the network manager.

I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu. I believe some members are actively using it?

Just stood up CentOS on a surplus Xeon workstation as local lamp stack dev box last week, though it's based on Red Hat Linux Enterprise, so don't know how similar it is?

Worse case if unable to roll back, you could reformat the drive for clean re-install of Ubuntu? Use a free self booting utility such as GParted. Make sure to save any files first.

Which version are you using? I would first try choosing advanced options on the boot screen, then the previous kernel.

There is also info here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/55868/installing-broadcom-wireless-drivers but I think the link from bwanshoom is probably better.
