Vipre or McAfee ??

It's time once again to renew my internet security software.

I'm currently running Vipre Internet Security 2014.

I did an online search for the the top rated software & came up with Vipre being rated # 1 on one site & McAfee way down on that list.

Another site rated McAfee # 1 with Vipre way down on the list.

Aside from cost & believe me, there is a significant difference. Amazon is running a promo for McAfee that is about 1/3 cost of Vipre. Cost is not as important to me as performance is.

Here's my question & this is between the two I have mentioned, I'm not really interested in any other software providers @ this time.

Which one would you choose ? Vipre Internet Security 2015 with password vault as an add-on or McAfee Total Protection 2015 ? :h

If it's Microsoft, go with Microsft Security Essentials. It's free and designed specifically for their OS.

I've also been using Vipre for about 10 years & have been happy with it but was just wondering if there was anything any better and maybe less money, since they have raised prices so much over the past 2-3 years or so.

There seems to be very mixed reviews of McAfee, anywhere you look.

You didn't mention which websites you used for checking reviews? Just beware that some of these sites are run by the manufacturers themselves, or their paid affiliates. AFAIK, there are about 5-6 reputable testing organizations that regularly review AV suites. Data which is used by the manufacturers for product improvement, or used by consumer publications or blogs.

I just briefly checked two of them, and McAfee(now Intel Security) received significantly higher scores in protection and performance. In fact, they improved the PC version immensely over the past couple of years where it typically used to rate average at best. But still wouldn't recommend it for MAC. My vote would be for McAfee(Intel), especially if you are getting it for free.

Do you happen to have the web sites of the 5-6 reputable testing organizations ?

Eset Smart Security - Not Free but does not slow down your system.. I've been infection free for the 6 Years I've had it on all my computers.

I agree w8ith 1492 about testing sites but can't agree on using McAfee. It created many problems on my systems.

Another thing to consider is the number of false positives detected by the AV.

I use McAfee because it comes free with our internet service. Have had it for years and never a virus so I guess it works well. Have not noticed that it affects speed any.

AVG is free and works just fine for years for me. I hate all the problems I used to have with others like Norton and mcafee and the like.

Yup!

Norton and most other anti virus programs are filled with so much bloatware that all they do is slow everything down. 90% of the things in them are not needed and usually don't work right anyway.

Thanks Guys, I just looked at AVG, but my question was Vipre or McAfee.

Besides, the comparable AVG package is not free & is about the same cost as the other two.
