What mapping software

What mapping software do you folks use? I like to plan out my route and have it stay exactly like I planned it without it trying to reroute me, like the old Microsoft trips and streets days.

In google maps even when I create a custom map in google-my maps and send it to my phone, it will still show alternate routes or try to redirect me. I just want it to stick to the route I have planned out and curious as to what others use.

The biggest issue I have with Streets & Trips is that I can'r get it to run on my laptop with a linux operating system. There are only 3 programs I use that won't run in Windows, so I have to keep an old laptop to run them - everything else runs on linux...

Seriously?

I use RV Trip Wizard for trip planning & a Garmin 760 for day-to-day navigation.

As one that also still likes and uses S&T 2013, I can attest to the fact that the distance between destinations hasn't changed since it came out and the general routes still work fine for my planning needs.

You sure must not travel much. Still using Windows 98? ๐Ÿ˜‰

BTW, RVTripWizard costs $39/year. Hardly a deal breaker.

I'm still using S&T 13 - have no issues with it and it gets me where I want to go. We're pretty much two-laners, so a missing new on-ramp to an interstate is not a big deal. It's easy to trip-plan on and it runs on an old XP laptop that sits on our doghouse - nice big screen. Hooks to GPS puck on dash.

Still use Street Atlas USA. Love the big screen and the ability to zoom with the scroll of the mouse. POIs, from the POI Factory, are better on a Garmin.

I don't believe you get detailed maps unless you've got the full maps downloaded, as in purchased.

As I understand it:
You get free and updated lifetime maps when you buy a new Garmin.
BUT, you have to keep updating the Garmin and if you fall behind on the updates (like if you fail to update for a year or so) then you loose the updating service.
Purchase for non-north america maps is required.

Google Maps/Waze - Can't beat the real time, crowd sources traffic that avoids slowdowns. If you want it to force an alternative route, pick some stops/waypoints/destinations along that path you want.

If I run up on a traffic jam, I'll never again listen to the phone/GPS when it tells me it's found an alternate route to avoid the jam. I did that once but the problem is a thousand other people did the same thing. The roads it directed me to kept getting smaller and smaller with more and more congestion. About an hour later, when I finally got back to the Interstate, the jam had long been cleared and traffic was moving at normal speed. Like I said, never again! I'll pull over if it's that bad and grab a nap or a sandwich (maybe both!).

Waze app on the phone supplemented by an older Garmin GPS.

When they disagree, I'll have my wife open INRIX App on my phone to determine why they disagree. It is often that one is picking up a traffic situation before the other one. Sometime they just calculate routing differently. Generally, I know my routing ahead of time by using Google maps on my computer.

Funny story on a bad traffic situation caused by a multi car pileup. I wasn't towing at the time. Both GPS and Waze told me to get off at an exit that made zero sense... so i did. Ran into an epic traffic jam of everybody else getting off at the same exit. Stuck behind this over size load. So, I continued to reroute using the soft stuff between the ears now. Get back to the original reroute, and turned onto the road right in front of the over size load, literally gained nothing. Get back on the original route, right in front of a highly decorated and colorful semi, that stayed on the original route. It was eye opening... but I was a lot less frustrated ๐Ÿ™‚
