Just want to report this problem solver works for me and performs as advertised.
It connects with my iPad anywhere and provides all the storage space I need for books, videos, pictures, music etc...
It creates it's own wifi network, DOES NOT NEED THE INTERNET!

That's actually one of the things that I don't like about the drive. If I plug it in via USB to charge it, then the wireless is disabled. That means I have to use a separate wall wart charger (comes with the drive) to power it while using the wireless. Seems to me they could have put a switch on the drive that would let you choose between using the USB for charging only vs data transfer/via USB.

I also have a Seagate Wireless Plus hard drive. I use it to store video files. I plug it into the USB on a Samsung Smart TV. While the USB is plugged in, it is not available wirelessly. I have also enabled the security features (WPA) and it can then be available over my WiFi Ranger wireless network.

I wonder how secure the internal storage is when the unit is in a repeat/ bridge mode in someplace like unsecured hotel wifi?

Just so people are not misled, this thing does NOT allow you access to the internet. It is a storage device, not unlike a hard drive, that you and other users can connect to wirelessly. It would be great for sharing videos, allowing several users to watch different saved movies at the same time on different devices, but you aren't going to be able to surf the web, send or receive e-mail or do other web things with it. To do that you will still need to connect to the internet.

Actually, the Seagate 1TB wifi hard drive can connect to the internet. While at a Disneyworld resort last week I used it as a repeater. Hotel wifi was strong at the door. Weak signal around the corner. I set the Seagate wifi drive near the door. Then from a tablet, went into settings to connect to hotel wifi. I still have access to all stored media. The real advantage to this is one could be watching a movie or listening to music and not miss an important notification. A friend bought one after playing with mine. He also uses it as a repeater to get to his shop elsewhere on the property.

All of these type devices that I have used have the pass-thru feature where they allow you to access another wi-fi hotspot in order to have access to the wi-fi storage and the internet at the same time. What westernrvparkowner is pointing out is that these devices do not provide access to the internet by themselves, an additional internet connected wi-fi source is required in order to have internet access.
Thank you for putting it much better than I did. Wifi has become pretty much generic for internet access. These devices may very well act as bridges, but they are not an internet connection device by themselves.

I wondered about how to connect to the internet while you are connected to it as well and they have a setting for that. device appears to be able to bridge to another wifi network. see this doc. pretty cool.

Something I never really thought about. Good point.
At a campground with poor reception, put it in a ziplock and sit it outside on the roof.

I have the Seagate Wireless Plus drive that Fizz linked to and can confirm it works great. With 1TB of storage you can put lots of content on it.

I also have a Western Digital Wi-Drive which is the same type of thing as the Maxell Airstash that troll3193 linked to but without the removable storage. The Wi-Drive and Airstash use solid state memory so they are smaller and lighter than the Seagate drive which uses a regular hdd. However, the Seagate's storage capacity blows the others away.

Any device that has wi-fi capability can connect so I use the drives with my phone, tablet, netbook or laptop.

These things are great in that you can have 3 devices connected to them playing 3 different movies without a hiccup or stutter.

not suggesting the product is not, simply pointing out that I had a run in with one where the person who purchased it and had their files on it had not secured it..

I actually am thinking of getting one, as it would get me out of the last reason I sync the ipad to the PC for videos...

What @troll3193 said. Great idea, but unless you secure it, it will be a huge liability. Unsecured, it makes every file on it available to everybody within 300 feet in all directions.

these things are cool. I used one like this on a recent flight to hong kong

http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-AirStash-Expandable-Capacity-666601/dp/B006473T92/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&q...

odd thing was it wasn't mine. I was looking to see if they had wifi on the plane and I connected to this device automatically.. Someone on the plane had it on and unsecured...

So..... you might check out the security options, or you might have guests browsing your files
