Win10 set update day. Samsung S4 add date to top of screen.

My desktop and laptop are now running win10, which I am struggling with after being comfortable with win7 for many years.
I routinely have working documents left open for days at a time while working on them (word and excel).

And of course every-time the system decides it needs to update windows it shuts down all those files and saves them as "autosave xyz". Which means I end up with two versions of the same file with different names and I have to go into file manager to clean up the mess.

Can I set the update day/time to once per month or so? Then I will put that day/time on my calendar and will know to shut those programs/files down a day before updates.


Phone: Samsung S4. Android 5.0.1. Verizon

The status bar at the top of the screen currently has: 4G,signal strength bars, battery percentage, battery icon, and time which stay on all the time. Regardless of what screen I'm in.

I want to add the current date to the status bar. How do I do this?

I have Win 10 Home on my laptop, and typing 'regedit' in the run box brings up the registry editor...

For my part, I find Win 10 to be just fine. I don't miss the Win 7 start menu, but the newest build has a reasonable facsimile for those who like it. The menu that appears when you right click in the bottom left of the screen, and a few shortcuts on the desktop, gives me access to everything I need.

This works, except Windows will turn the service back on without letting you know. Thus did my laptop downloaded the giant full OS update while using my phone's hotspot, and ate up all my data for the month. Best to set it to "metered connection", at least then it only does critical security updates.

OP,

You need to get in the habit of saving your own files before walking away, even if you leave it open. Power outages are less friendly than Microsoft updates.

#1, I think you have that backwards.

Win7 is the BACKEND, not the "front end"..

Front end is what you SEE, back end is the underpinnings that you DON'T SEE.

However, in reality Win7 and Win 10 have many changes between the two that simply can not easily be returned back to Win 7 days.

MS in their wisdom has lost all sight of reality and does not want to admit defeat in the Phone and Tablet OS front.. They tried to make a PC desktop user conform to the limitations of a phone or Tablet touch screen by stripping out the familiar desktop/start menu and giving birth to the ever kludged "Metro Tiles"..

While you can bring back SOME of the Desktop and Start look and feel, there ARE many other features that simply cannot be brought back to the UI. Most mods must be done via registry (which home Edition no longer has a Registry Editor), or Powershell line commands..

Additionally there are features which just plain no longer exist and cannot ever be brought back unless MS feels like including the feature in the next release (don't hold your breath on that).

MS does reserve the right to REMOVE ANY PROGRAM/APP from your PC USING WIN10 AT ANY TIME EVEN IF YOU BOUGHT THE PROGRAM/APP if they think it may cause instability or they feel you have violated a license agreement..

So, in essence Win 10 has very little of Win7 behind it.

Two things for all your computer experts. 1) W10 is a for the most part, a front end to W7. 2) To stop W10 from restarting all the time, go to Settings, select Update & Security, select Restart Options, under Schedule time , turn it to off. You will now get a notification in the Action center that an update needs a restart. You can now close all open programs, save any files you have open and then do the restart.

Not sure if you asking a question for Win10 OR your Samsung Phone :h

But I will address a couple of Windows things..

First, even though you have left open documents for years on your PCs that IS a very bad thing to do. The autosave feature for years has been saving your bacon from file corruption or loss..

Consider yourself lucky to have TWO USABLE files!

MS office automatically opens a second copy of that file as a TEMP file which is a scratch file, this allows you to modify and then undo modifications until you decide to save the file..

While what you have done has worked for you, eventually you may find yourself with a corrupted file and all your work lost.

It only takes SECONDS to open a file, so SAVE AND CLOSE your files when done editing.

Second, if you want your 10 Desktop to look and act more like say XP/7 there are free add on programs to fix the 10 mess..

CLASSICSHELL.NET can bring back many of the Desktop features like the Startmenu that MS decided users no longer wanted/used/needed.. And it is FREE.

Download a date time widget
But it probably will be on the screen you select, Not the status bar
And yes you can set the same widget on multiple screens

If you Goto apps, widgets
And scroll your screensj
You should find a clock & date widget already on the phone
That you can place anywhere you want, like the top of a specific screen

There is no way to add date to status bar. If you press on the status bar it will change to display the date. You can also display the date on the lock screen if desired.
