225/75R15 tires

I replaced the tires on my utility trailer with take offs from our travel trailer. Both trailers have 225/75R15 tires. The ones from the travel trailer ended up being over 2 inches taller? Have any of y'all ever run into this before?

Here is the Carlise ST 225/75d15 Load range C 2150# 50PSI max. Your call out of the D is a Bias tire. "225/75D15

The OD is 27.5" on C load range of the ST 225/75d15. If that was a D load range, even in the bias, they would be 28.4" OD

The Marathon is a radial tire. The ST 225/75R15 Load range D has an OD of 28.3"

While there is a difference in the spec's, 27.5 to 28.3 (they are 2 different types and load ranges of tire) it does not account for 2".

BTW, the Marathon ST 225/75R15 Load range D with an OD of 28.3" is a common OD amongst other brands of the same radial tire size and D load range. Maxxis being one brand and even Carlisle are all 28.3. The odd one right now is your Carlisle bias tires. I have found Carlisle bias trailer tires different OD's then other brand before. Never really knew why.

Can you post the brand name of each? It is fairly easy to find them on line which lists the OD they are suppose to be. Need the load range.

Also check the load ratings on both, is the max pounds load at what pressure the same? What are they?

I replace ATV tires often and find large physical size variations between manufacturers and tread type even though they are marked the same size. This is also the reason why they tell you not to mix tire brands and models on a 4wd vehicle. I would not be surprised if there is variation between Maxxis and Goodyear trailer tires of the same size, but it doesn't matter since they are not drive wheels.

Both tires are off and the radial tires are the taller ones. The wheel size is the same 15-6. I will try to figure out how to post pictures this evening. I would not have thought anything about the difference if it was 1/2 inch but one set measures right @ 26" diameter and the other set is 29".

Are you sure that you are not comparing bias ply tires to radials?

Are both tires OFF their respective trailers? A tire with the weight of a trailer on it will be "shorter" than a bare tire.

My experience is that the bias tires sit significantly taller. I tried to buy an ST215/75D15 (bias) from Tractor Supply as a spare for my utility trailer which had ST215/75R15's (radial) on it. The bias tire was WAY bigger around than the radial. I ended up taking it back and ordering a radial spare (Goodyear Marathon) online.

The Marathon turned out to be about 1/2" SHORTER than the OEM Triangle radials on the trailer.

Actual physical dimensions of tires vary greatly, so even if you are comparing apples to apples, it's not unusual.

X2 on the rim difference. The wider rim will make the tire sit lower.

Both Goodyear tires are the same size and they are the same size as the Maxxis tires I put on the travel trailer. The Carlisle tires on the utility trailer are the smaller ones.

Something's not right. If that happened on my 5'er then I would only have 1/4" between the tires. Right now I have 2-1/4" between the two 225/75/15 GY Marathons. If the new ones came in 2" bigger in diameter I'd be stuck. Looking around at 225/75/15D tires I see them @28.3-28.8" in dia.

I agree with JIMNLIN that narrower rims could make a difference, but two inches is a lot.

The tires that were on the travel trailer had less than 300 miles when I took them off. I didn't trust them, China Goodyear Marathons. There is nothing wrong with them. If I knew how to post a pic I would.

Sounds like the tire that is two inches taller has separated tread/belts issues.

Also a narrow width wheel can cause the tire to balloon the center of the tires tread.

I know there should not have been that much of a difference....but there was. I found it very odd. I just hope they will fit under the fenders of the utility trailer.
