If they removed your awning without installing pins to prevent the springs from releasing, then they should have re-wound the tension on the springs. It would be good to know why they removed the swning for better reply.
The black screw cover rubber molding prevents water from getting into the screw areas which can leak into the walls. I have removed the rubber and treated with Armoral or something like it to clean the rubber and soften it slightly to make more manageable. When installing it back in it will stretch slightly. I install it with the ends on the bottom near one of the weep holes.
Sounds like you need to find a better shop!
