Can You Pass Through States with Stay at Home Orders?

We are thinking of heading to our boat for the summer in the epicenter of the virus. Taking it away from there and quarantining ourselves on it for the summer.

We are in Florida and are looking at going to NYC.

Delaware, for example, has a stay at home order.

Can we drive through Delaware then store the RV in NJ or should we expect to be stopped? I don't understand how this all works for travelers as it's all worded to people living in houses.

I've seen stories on BBC about the Scottish and other islands closing themselves to RV's and tent campers.

So many flocked to the islands that they overwhelmed and overcrowded the few campgrounds, beach boondocking sites, etc.

Ferries were being limited to only island permanent residents inbound. Fees waived of lowered for folks with RVs leaving.

I would not be surprised if that was happening many other places in Europe. Spain, Portugal, Atlantic and Med coasts of France, Italy are all popular with 'caravanners'. So is Croatia. Bit early in the year for most of those, but...

We head back there next week because it is where we live.

The reality is, of course, not really as bad as the Post portrays it to be, but it is a PITA for people who actually live there. People who own summer homes there don't understand that staffing over the winter for all first responders and hospital staff is much lower than when they are typically there in July and August. We all wonder what they think they are going to do there because most of them never enjoyed the wind and rains of April and May on Nantucket (which is why we are in Florida for a couple of months). 🙂

Luckily they shut down access to non-residents a couple of days ago and if non-residents leave for any reason they are not permitted to return.

Wylie has less than 3,000 people the first time I went through there. When we sold our house and went full-time, Wylie's over 45,000 would have made it the tenth largest city in Arkansas, and Garland has many more people than Little Rock.

Oh, out near Southfork. That used to be out in the "boonies" but it's probably pretty well developed by now.

Do you have a bad relationship with the marina?

Assuming it's a good relationship, giving them a call and explaining your situation and assuring them that as soon as the all clear comes through, you will be back and get the truck out, may be all that's needed as no one is likely hanging out at the marina otherwise and using the parking.

Hard to explain but anything larger than a car is prohibited by ordinance. It's a very urban area. I've got away with it here and there but they weren't happy about it. And we need to leave it for the summer.

So storing it elsewhere or just taking the pickup are the only actual options. If all goes back to semi-normal, they'll be very upset I left it there.

Sorry to those who can't take some humor. This virus has scared far too many people (snowflakes?). Were you all this scared in 2009 when the H1N1 killed 12,468 people in the US and there were 60 million reported cases? As I recall nothing much happened during that pandemic, no panic, no empty store shelves, no stay at home orders, no closed businesses, no nothing. Yet this new virus comes along, which isn't a fraction as deadly as the H1N1 and everyone is losing their minds. Maybe we've gotten too soft.

I live near NYC. There are currently about 15000 known cases and 150 deaths. Those numbers are expected to double every 3 days and in fact it appears that the rate is increasing. Experts are predicting a quarter million cases in NYC within 2 weeks with 2500 deaths and 25,000 requiring hospitalization. Three days after that the number of cases will again double and those requiring hospitalization will exceed the total number of hospital beds in NY State.

My doctor today strongly disagrees with you. We went in for our semi-annual checkup in a northeast Dallas suburb this morning.

He is a staunch right wing supporter of the Republicans, Trump and Gregg Abbot (TX Governor).

He was ranting about TX Lt Gov Dan Patrick's statements yesterday that the country needs to get back to work, and that we can live with an increased infection and death rate rather than damage the economy.

Dr was very emphatic that no one has a good idea what this really is yet. How to stop it, and that this is spreading much faster and worse than anything the US has ever seen. On the eventual sickness and effect, he says he sees nothing that would stop this short of 50,000 deaths, minimum. Would nto be surprised to see five to ten times that if we stop our efforts to minimize contact.

This is a guy who thinks Trump is god and Pelosi the devil.

When we arrived, one window at the office (a stand alone building) was open. They took our names and told us to wait in our vehicle until we got a text. Took us straight into a checkup room. We were not allowed to be in the hallway when another patient was there. Diabetes tests, urine samples, blood work, we were escorted from one to the next.

Very strange. And they only see 'wellness' checks in the morning. Anyone with any problems is seen in the afternoon, and more isolation.

So far they have seen no COVID-19 cases. Three patients asked to be checked for the virus, and were referred to Dallas County Health Department.

Saturday, we visited daughter and her family after winter in the RGV. Three of her four children, one boyfriend and her husband. Eight in all. It is almost #2 grandson's 18th birthday, a small party.

Today after Dr, we stopped by for 10-15 minutes to drop off something we picked up in Mexico for her, but forgot to bring Saturday.

About two hours later, she sent us a text. She worked in a large building last week. Work from home started yesterday.

She has been informed that someone on her floor in the building has tested positive for COVID-19. She, and everyone she has been in contact with since the middle of last week needs to go into 14-days self-quarantine.

Most concerned about her almost 24 year old daughter who is 5 months pregnant with my first great granddaughter. So far this has been rougher on pregnant women than any group, even us old farts.

On the OP and the original topic. I've seen nothing about stopping truckers traveling normal routes and such in states with lock down orders.

But I would say an internet forum is one of the worst places to try to get accurate policy information. (Facebook is worse).

Policies are changing daily, hourly in some cases.

In about two weeks, there will be some clarity to the situation. Unless you have to move right now, try to stay put.

If you have to go now, call the state police and ask them what is the rule in their state for through travelers.

Look how long your post is. My attention began to wander after about 2 paragraphs. Cut to the chase. Or as I read once in a book about songwriting: Don't bore us, get to the chorus. I found myself fixated on the question of "What is the suburb Northeast of Dallas that he mentions?" Garland? Richardson? Buckingham is in there, too.

This was on RVTravel.com sunday edition:
Wondering how coronavirus may affect your RV trip? Imagine the family in China, who while on the road in their motorhome, suddenly were quarantined in place. Zhang Qi’s family spent two wonderful days on the coast of the Fujian province and were ready to head home. The local authorities suddenly shut down all tourist support facilities, and the Qi family was stuck in their rig, almost out of fuel, in cold weather. They spent nights shivering under seat cushions, waiting for their two-week enforced quarantine. Finally, they called social services and they responded with blankets, water and arrangements for electricity. And they also brought food to help the family that was by then down to a few instant noodles. After the quarantine period was over, the family still couldn’t receive permission to travel, so Zhang volunteered at a health center, while the rest of the family made friends with neighbors. After a rather protracted vacation that was supposed to last a few days, the Qi family, after 40 days, got to go back home – to Wuhan.

Interstates are full of autos , trucks and RVs . A stay at home order means what it sez , if you are home stay there . I doubt if any at all has been pulled off a highway , handcuffed and thrown in jail . They are trying to empty jails .

Things can change very fast, having said that we left Florida this past Thursday for the Canadian Maritimes, arrived Sunday, staying in three hotels, Lumberton,NC, Hazleton, PA and Bangor, Maine, total of 2100 miles, 13 states and one province in Canada.

No problem with Motels, we reserved ahead, each had a restaurant either on the property or next to it. The restaurants were all closed for sit in, but they had carry outs.

No problem with fuel, some even had gloves at the tanks.
Now we are in self quarantine for 14 days at the request of our province.

Traffic was busy, not overwhelming and few if any police we noticed, and everyone seemed to be driving fast like in places 75 to 80 mph.
So unless things change your travel should be ok based on ours through 13 states and one province.
