Diesel fuel question

Question about diesel fuel in the USA.
In Canada I only see one choice at the pump. This is my first diesel, a 2012 F350, and I know there are at least two choices south of me.
Headed to Seattle Monday for a week via Montana, Idaho, and maybe Oregon.
Thanks all
Rob

Thanks
With 2 boys aged 7 and 9 we stop every 3 hours regardless so I did not pack the Gerry can for the trip. I hear ya on BC and gas. I fill again in the crowsnest pass for the same reasons as you.

Good to know pumps are quite user friendly. Did tow 2 summers ago through 7 states but had the f 150 so no problems with finding fuel other than avoiding the ethanl blends.

Thanks
Anxious for tomorrow!
Montana, Idaho, Washington ,and possibly Oregon. 2 weeks on the road!!!

Hello, I just got back from a trip to Seattle from Calgary viva Idaho.
I only saw #2 diesel Lots of places to get fuel. Some of the highway stops have a bigger noxell for the big rigs, it works but just go slow as it will spill back at you
More Important is that the pump has easy access for you to be able to get in and out with out
any problems.
I take 4 -20 litre jerry cans of fuel for a couple of reasons, so I can get though BC with out having to purchase fuel,
So I don't always have to exit the main freeway in the USA to get fuel, I always see the station after the off ramp.
I can plan a pit stop and fill my fuel when and where I want.
Drive safe and have fun

Spence 1 I buy my diesel here in Calgary at one location only . Superstore.

Man it was easy decisions will the gaser!

Glad I asked.
Seems like number 2 is the way to go.

In every case taxed vs. untaxed is very clearly marked. Usually the wording is "off road diesel" or something similar. It also has a red dye in it, and will usually be much less than the other diesel. Federal tax on diesel is $.24/gallon IIRC then add in state taxes, and you'll end up with a price $.50 a gallon or so less than taxed diesel.

And in Oregon the #2 with PUC permit is virtually always at the truck stop island only. I've NEVER seen it at the regular auto island.

If all else fails, just ask the attendent, they can tell you which is the on road diesel.

And yes, stay away from #1, it is very close to kerosene. VERY poor lubricity and much lower energy value. My truck manual warns against using #1 under any conditions.

Traveling through Montana every summer many of the smaller towns have 3 diesel pumps.

#2 taxed - that's the one you want/must use
#2 untaxed died fuel- for farmers and off road use only.
#1 not to be used in virtually all pickups with diesels. Not really sure who uses it.

In Oregon you will often also find 3 choices
#2 taxed state and federal- again what you use
#2 "with PUC permit" Truckers can use this and pay weight mile tax rather than state fuel tax. difference between this is the state $.24/gallon fuel tax is not collected, but you need the proper permit to fill from these tanks.
#2 off road died fuel. Again, not what you use.

Where do you normally fill up in Canada, and have you noticed any differences between stations? I have an old 7.3 that is brand loyal and runs quieter and gets better fuel economy.

Some stations may have green handles on gasoline. Always read the labels, and be aware of what's actually flowing into your tank.

In Indiana, most diesel prices are advertised w/ out sales tax, or "exempt trucks" usually in small letters. Be sure you go to RV Islands or use the "auto" diesel pump which is more $ per gallon.

Diesel fuel---- Most of the Diesel handles are GREEN in the west coast and south west states BUT you will ocassionally see them with YELLOW HANDLES. Some of the stations are selling Bio-diesel fuel, be sure and check what % of this fuel you can use and not harm your engine.

You may not be concerned but not all diesels can run all Bio mixes. My 6.4 can only run #2 and B5.

ive been running nothing but a bio blend and so far no problems. we could really get into it with additives here also. I run 2 stroke oil(ashless) and power services with every tank.

2 stroke oil from walmart tc3 in a small blue bottle.
power services in a silver bottle(I just buy the small and add whole thing per tank)

good luck. whenever I have to get fuel from unknown areas I will carry extra fuel filters. ๐Ÿ™‚
