Later this summer we are planning on going into Canada for about a week. Does anybody know for sure if you positively have to have a passport to get across and back in?

I clipped this from the Canadian Border services Agency's website:

"When you enter Canada, a CBSA officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if one is necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. If you are a permanent resident of Canada or the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card with you."

You can check out their website for other things you need to know about entering Canada.

U.S Customs and Border Protection requires that you have a Passport, a Passport Card or a Trusted Travelers card to come home. You can see the requirements listed here.

Inquire if a Passport Card will be sufficient for your needs. It used to be about half the cost of a passport. If you are only planning on going to Canada, it might save you a few bucks.

Absolutely! Both countries have checked/scanned our NY Enhanced Drivers Licenses (passport card equivalent) in both directions many times.

What they said. You can leave the country without one, but you can't return without either a passport or the alteranative passport card. Get it now, do not delay. They are good for like 10 years, but take weeks to get in the first place unless you are willing to spring for the extra cost to have somebody hand-carry the application around DC from office to office.

Yes, Canada doesn't care but if you want Uncle Sam to let you back in you need a passport.
