Homeless - safe to store propane/gas in car while sleeping?

Hi, does anyone have advice?

I am homeless, and live and sleep in my car. I want to buy a propane or gas camping stove burner so I can boil water to make spaghetti, etc.

I am thinking of buying this one:

Camp Chef Explorer Camping Stove from Amazon

Is it safe to store propane or gasoline next to me while I am sleeping in the car? Should I get a carbon-monoxide detector to mount in the car? There is no place I can store it outside at, and my self-storage facility is almost two hours away from where I live.

Thanks!

Also, where can I pull out my camping stove to cook, next to my car? Will any large parking lot or city street do?

โ€œHere is a fact that you may not know: A number of states have made a deal with private prisons to keep all beds at 90% full or else pay fines on a daily basis. This means that police, DAs, and judges are forced to toss people in the clink or their job is at risk. The true mentally ill are not wanted in jail, because they cost too much. A vandweller whom is trying to eke out an honest living, and who plays by the rules is their perfect target, because they can keep arresting them, and they "store quietly". Plus, the van and the belongings inside will sell at auction for good money once it gets seized and impounded.โ€

What States???

The prison population in the United States had dropped in 2012 for the third consecutive year, and in more than half the stateโ€™s prisons populations dropped from my readings, many like New York, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina, showed substantial reductionsโ€ฆ

policy makers now think they can actually reduce recidivism and cut the number of prisonersโ€ฆ while the recession has played a role or kick started the shrinking prison populations, Changes in state and federal sentencing laws for lower-level offenses like those involving drugs have played a role in the shift, but more than anything changing public attitudes are the major driver behind the declining prison numbersโ€ฆ decriminalizing drugs and legalizing them will play a major role in the futureโ€ฆ I will withhold judgment on why I believe this is happeningโ€ฆ

but there is no way that I believe states are out to arrest and house homeless for the profits generated by auctioning off their remaining possessionsโ€ฆ

back on topic, at best living out of a minivan alone might be ok as a very short term solution to your problemsโ€ฆ

heaven forbid any of the privileged RV.neterโ€™s fall victim to your situationโ€ฆ I do know a few very well to do folks that would not survive your situation even for a short while, and they are hardly what one would call social when they are out of their elementโ€ฆ one thought the world was coming to the end because he lost power for a few daysโ€ฆ wouldnโ€™t know how to start a generator and would have to hire someone to plug an extension cord inโ€ฆ although where their driver would sleep would be an added problemโ€ฆ
yes they are out there, yes there are times they lose it all, and their privilege or education hasnโ€™t guaranteed them anything โ€ฆ

God speed in finding your way to a better and safer environmentโ€ฆ

If you are a troll and I have no way of knowing, at least you are good at it, then shame on you for the injustice and ill will the trolling would cause to others trapped outsideโ€ฆ

The Bay Area! Heck, it is one of the highest costs for housing and living in the country... Maybe you should try Seattle.

Education, no education. Would not matter much. At some point for some reason, a number of doctors and a judge. Came to the conclusion, the OP could no longer work. Hence she was given SSI. And she makes no reference to a physical disability. One can draw their own conclusions, from that, as to her future employment opportunities

I sincerely do wish her the best. And hope she gets back into housing of some sort soon

Welcome Mileena, you can always go to day parks that have picnic sites to cook a meal, I wouldn't suggest parking lots at all.

Thank you. That is a terrific idea: cooking in some kind of park with picnic tables. There must be plenty, even in city/suburban areas.

Love hearing that!!!!

Still stand my statement.
Are you sure you want to get a PHD? If so Gov't used to put out (and could only get a reference section of library) what is called "Occupational outlook". Had their projections of upcoming employment shortages and in what areas. Best friend went the PHD route and bounces from job to job. Always getting layed off due to funding or research money. I on the other hand didn't pay attention in school (wish I could do over) and joined military and had to get a GED before 1st reenlistment (after failing parts of it first 2 times)then after getting out of active military stay'd in the Military reserves and drove a truck until retiring at age 57. I'm NOT saying this to beat my chest, just the opposite, trying to get at the point of: Learn what is in demand and marketable and what you can do. When this economy blew up it wasn't because of truck drivers with PHD's. Just the second part, PHD's. I loved being a truck driver like a hole in the head. But always could get a job (demand). As you can tell this forum "solves" all the worlds problems one key stroke at a time. Just like over the hood of a car or in the kitchen or around the campfire. Here is another link you might like.http://www.vandwellers.org/ Your in a good spot to be homeless! Where I'm at they freeze in the winter.
OK, back on topic: when I do carry an extra propane bottle (40 pound?)because wife and in laws for some reason need to have a camping/cooking feast we meet up usually in middle of the state. I transport it in the bathroom with the bathroom vent open. Some propane might make it out the vent(heavier than air) if the tank does leak and RV also has CO alarm. Home depot also has alarms that are not to pricey.

Thanks for the advice about Ph.D.s path1! You know, I respect you very much. I had at one time thought about becoming a truck driver when I was young and unemployed, but I had some traffic tickets on my record! I am now too old for the military, and wouldn't have been accepted anyway, per their own policies.

I do best in academia, so I think that's where my future lies. I've done some research, and as I posted above, the average starting salary for a biologist or chemist with a Ph.D. in a non-governmental job is $70,000-$80,000. I want to specialize in cancer research and/or obesity research. With those two things, you will never be without a job!

I also agree that I am in a good area for being homeless, although, in many ways, I would prefer to freeze at night than be hot, like here, as I am from near Buffalo.

Thanks for the link. Also, I read that CO only occurs when propane is burning, not from a leaking canister, so I think that a CO detector would not be of much use. Either someone posted that here, or I read that elsewhere. Unless you meant there is a detector for propane gas?

Has anyone 'read' that the OP has a $1,000 per month income? Has an education and by god sure as heck knows all about fumes from propane and fuel. One minute the OP has a car and then the next has a van and snores so has to keep windows up,obviously has a computer, etc......come on folks. If it looks and smells like a troll it is. All this oh a poor homeless person, hogwash there are SO many shelters available that no one needs to be on the street period. And if a homeless person doesn't like to arrive drug free and behave well as required by shelters for the safety of 'all' then that's too bad. Let those sit in a car and snort up and then the cops will be able to take care of them.
OP:..no privacy, lots of rules (like in by 6 PM, out by 7 AM)..... Not that I am disrespecting the homeless, but I also don't want to associate myself with them.

:S

Wow, your entire post is so ignorant. Your points are so ridiculous, I am not even going to try to address them, as it wouldn't help.

I will assume the OP isn't a troll, but I might be wrong.

I recommend the OP considers finding another place to go. California is a very hostile place to live these days unless you are making over $100,000 a year, or you have a sizable nest egg. Someone living out of a van might have made it there before 2008, but now, you will just end up a victim by street punks, or the target of police aggression.

Here is a fact that you may not know: A number of states have made a deal with private prisons to keep all beds at 90% full or else pay fines on a daily basis. This means that police, DAs, and judges are forced to toss people in the clink or their job is at risk. The true mentally ill are not wanted in jail, because they cost too much. It sucks, but seriously consider leaving California. There are better places in the US to go. Arizona is a decent state. Texas is a state that has jobs virtually everywhere. With a PhD, you can find work -somewhere-. Even New York state is having a boom.

End of lecture, apologies for the digression. However, I know people who tried vandwelling in the Bay Area or any coastal part of CA, and invariably it doesn't turn out well.

solsprack: no you weren't lecturing, and I appreciate your points. Thank you for your advice. You are good hearted.

I agree with you that California is crappy in many ways. I grew up most of my life on the east coast: in Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and Maine. Things are definitely cheaper there, and maybe even job prospects. Plus it rains there and everything is green in the spring and summer, which I like (as opposed to California, where everything is brown year round!).

At the same time though, California is very liberal, very LGBT friendly, especially in the Bay Area where I live now; and I love that. Re the police here, from all I have seen, they are more professional and respectful than out east. I haven't had a problem living in my minivan because the rear compartment is completely blacked out for privacy, and I only use it to sleep in areas where a lot of people park for the night. In the day, I am busy, working out, doing errands, going to the library, etc. I stay in nice suburban areas. No one actually knows I am homeless, in fact. They would be shocked if they knew.

Also, with AB 109 in California here, they are trying to reduce the size of prisons/jails and letting criminals back onto the street, so I am not too worried about being jailed.

I also can't stand the heat, so I park near cooler areas of the Bay Area to sleep, so, unfortunately, Texas and Arizona would be out of the picture, at least in the summer.

And I can get a free public community college education here (I posted this same statement in another forum a few months ago and was accused of trolling because of this by an ignorant member. they did not know there is a fee waiver program here for state community colleges for people who are low income. someone came later on and backed me up on this). Yes, I do already have a B.A., but it's not in a marketable field, and I have decided to switch to a STEM area (science, technology, engineering, math) to increase my job prospects (the average starting salary for a biologist or chemist with a Ph.D. in a non-governmental job is $70,000-$80,000 a year or more). Plus, not having worked or been to school as an undergraduate for 20 years now, I need to have those community college professors as references for when I apply to graduate school.

You don't actually need an undergraduate major in the sciences to go to a graduate program in those areas; you just have to have an equivalent knowledge, which I will get on my own in just a few years. Sound bizarre? Maybe, but not for me. Not bragging (I just don't want to be accused of trolling when I'm not), but I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude and was smart enough to get into a top-ranked law school and an Ivy League Ph.D. program. So yes, I can do it. I can do anything academically. I thrive in academe. I didn't finish law school or the Ph.D. program I was in because of personal/social reasons, not because of academic deficiency. But I am working on this now and am older, more mature. We'll see... I think I will be successful this time.

Sterno in a sealed can is a safe alternative. It's a little lower output compared to propane but it will boil water.
