im not sure if this is the right section for this question, but the mod section seemed to be all RV questions

my springs on my 1500 ram appear to be shot. my trailer is 5000 or so dry. would I be better off getting some springs for a 2500 or get a set of helper springs? I prefer to keep the money to a minimum in hopes that this is the last year I have this truck

Springs take care of the bounce/recovery from bumps in the road while springs carry the weight, so if it's bouncing long after you hit a bump or pothole it's a shock issue...

104,000 on original shocks, no wonder it's bouncing. The rears are easy to take off. Take one off and push on it. If it pushes real easy then it's shot. I bet you can work it like an accordion. Impossible to do with quality gas shocks.

I just changed the junky expensive air ride suspension on my Town Care to A Monroe coil spring conversion kit. This included the progressive coil springs and new shocks.

When I took the old shocks off my car I could not believe how worn out they were. When my Town Car would hit a bump the car would bounce all over the road. I could fully collapse the old shock by hand once I got it out and it took forever to rebound.... And that was just laying on the ground.

Seriously improved the ride with the new springs and shocks.

I'd go to autozone and get you some shocks and spend a few minutes putting them on. You may be suprised at the difference it makes.

Thanks!

Miles are 104, 500 and I'm gonna guess original shocks. Last year was the most I've towed my trailer. I found some shocks for towing. Sounds like I should try that first. A guy at work keeps telling me my leafs and bad and that's why its so bouncy driving down the road, even while not hauling.the truck does seem like is sits at factory hieght still though. Maybe a picture would help?

I would go with shocks first, then airbags or helper springs.

#1 shocks (mileage?)
#2 more or less links on your hitch chains.

Other than above have you recently begun carrying more gear in the truck or the trailer?

Sounds like shocks to me if you have the WD hitch set up right.

I feel they are shot because recently, the back end is very bouncing. I've been towing with it for 3 yrs. not very often, or very far. I got the truck from a dealership 4 yrs ago. im not sure what the truck was used for by the previous owner. the truck does still sit with the back end higher then the front. I do have a WD hitch, and it does level the truck out really good. so, im pretty much assuming with how bumping of a ride it has become, that it is my springs and shocks

Unless you've been hauling a 1,000lbs for the last 9 years I highly doubt your springs are shot. A 2005 truck should have springs that last for years. My guess is your WD is not right.

Why do you think the springs are shot?

Even if you are using a weight distribution hitch, your truck probably will have noticeable rear-end sag when the trailer is attached.

With a properly sized and properly adjusted WDH, it is not uncommon for the rear end to be 1.5-2" lower with TT attached and WD activated versus unhitched -- even when the springs are new.

Cheapest option is to take the truck to a spring shop. Have them reset the curve in the springs, and add a leaf.

Go to a frame/spring shop. They actually have formula specs for figuring out what is just the best route to go for your truck.

Not a truck but I took my MH to one of those shops. Best thing I ever did. After listening to all the wrong******how to fix my problem from local repair shops.

I went with new leaf springs and they added one leaf. BEST thing I have ever did to a vehicle.
