Single valve installation......... valve handle parallel with cold water inlet line is for 'In Service' (as in picture)

Turn handle 90* so that it is perpendicular to cold water inlet line is for 'Bypass' (no water to water heater)

Is it time for your medication or mine?

Assuming the water heater is drained, leave the plug out and turn on the city water (or water pump). Does water come out the water heater drain hole? If so, that's the summer setting; if not, it's the winter setting, and going to the other position will be summer.

Once you figure it out, maybe drawing a little diagram or otherwise labeling things with a sharpie nearby (assuming it's not in a readily visible spot in your RV) would help you remember for next time.

Usually the water flows in the direction of the valve handle.
