My first "Oops!" with my Outback.... 3 years and not a single event has occurred, then found this yesterday:

This is not mold. It was 3 Diet Coke cans left in the refrigerator when we slept in the camper one week-end recently (drive way camp) and then shut everything down because it was getting REALLY cold. So, we thought we had everything (liquid) back in the house, turned off the heat and shut down the refrigerator ... Oops! Had 3 cans in the door.

So, this is not mold, it's 3 exposed cans of frozen Diet Coke. What a mess!

Clean up wasn't bad. It did a couple good hours though. Got the camper heated back up so it was nice and comfortable. I wiped everything down with a wet rag, and dried with paper towels. This got most everything off.

Then I repeated with bleach water.

The one item that took the longest was cleaning out the seals around the door. It kept oozing Coke. I finally had to pull back the seal to see what was going on, and found the weep hole. I looked at the seals on the other three edges of the door, and they had it too. I suppose these are there so the air can come and go from the rubber seal when the door opens and closes. But, it became a catch to collect the spilled Coke also, filling the thing. So I had to keep oozing it out the hole until I couldn't get any more out. Then I filled it with bleach water and did it again. This took the longest.

The end result was good. It's been a long time since we've left liquids in the camper over the winter months. I suppose when doing those drive way camps, I just need to check a little more close.

We're heading for South Carolina this coming Saturday for a week. So getting everything ready now, so Saturday AM we can just pull out! We're so excited, so discovering this little "Oops!" was really a bit of a surprise!

End results:

Worst I have had like that was getting to the campground and getting all set up. Decided I was thirsty so I opened the mini fridge to get a root beer. One had fallen against the door and fell out and landed on something sharp spraying all over the place. That6 stuff was all over the floor, walls front door screen, and even made it to the ceiling not to mention the stripe up my back. What a mess. I would love to just have one frozen and contained in the fridge.

My OOPS didn't turn out as good as yours haha...

When parked here at the house we keep using the fridge/freezer connected to the house 20AMP service...

Then one of those hurricanes came up the East coast and knocked out our power for about a week here in Northern Neck VA.

We survived the power outage just fine using a couple of Power Inverters and large battery bank on my other OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer. Then once a day would run the 2KW Generator to re-charge those batteries and run the house fridge at the same time the generator was running.

About four days into to the power failure I was walking out near the woods and got the strong smell of something dead. My thoughts was a deer or something had died in my woods. Doing some checking around I couldn't find anything in the woods and then it dawned on me it was coming from the parked trailer next to the woods.

Sure enough the smell was what was left from a 14lb turkey in the freezer... Never thought about the parked trailer when the power went off haha...

We cleaned and cleaned and never could really get rid of the dissolved turkey smell. I field stripped the fridge much like what you did and cleaned and cleaned. We are still using the fridge but when it is first opened up you get a very small whiff of the smell sometimes. Open can of coffee grinds did the best over time...

I really should replace the fridge but it is not on the road anymore and the fifth wheel is used only as a get-away place for us and the visiting kids.

It happens. In all of three years, that's the worst? Good for you.

Where in SC? Heading to Myrtle or someplace else?

We know how you feel. 2weeks ago, myself and DW opened our bevergae fridge here at S&B. Found that a can had frozen and exploded, when it fell against the back wall where the cooling element is. Had to empty the fridge, all drawers and trays, just like you.

The only advantage we had, was that it happened in our laundry room where we had a laundry sink.

I once left a can of Coke on the console cup holder. It created a fountain to the top of the windshield and down the dash. Cleaning that syrupy frosty was quite a mess. So I appreciate your efforts.

Yeah oops indeed!
Ugh what a mess, but we have all done something to our rigs from time to time.
Mine was a full pound of butter down a heat register. I can still smell it once in a while!!
Yours was easier to clean up though.....

It's good that you drink DIET Coke, the sugared kind would have supported mold and made a sticky mess.

Glad it was only coke and not mold but look at it the bright way the fridge is spotlessly clean. Want to come and do mine? hahaha
