I hope you didn't interpret my post as anti-military. They won't LET the boys fight!!

What did we do with the german-infested french villages? We dropped leaflets warning the residents that they should leave (hence, the long lines of evacuees on european roads at the time) and then, within a respectable period for civilians to seek shelter or leave, we blew the %$^#@village of the face of the earth with every german combatant either dead or in custody. Many civilians, the elderly, women and children were also killed, of course. The French accepted those corollary casualties as the cost of victory. That is what should have happened long ago in Bagdad, as soon as the insurgency started, and today we would not only be basking in victory, we would probably be pumping Iraqi oil into XOM tankers!

It's not the troops fault and I hope my post didn't imply that. The problem is our unwillingness to accept civilian causalties. That misguided policy started in Korea, humiliated us in Viet Nam and has made a complete fiasco out of this war. In war, innocent people are going to die! Period! If the liberals don't get over it, we'll never win a war again - because the bad guys have learned how to exploit our weaknesses and render ineffective our state-of-the-art weaponry. Just wear civvies and hide with the women and ya got it made. Just go out at night, like urban gang members, and raise hell! Nobody will bother you.

Bottom line- military strategy 1A - never allow the enemy a safe refuge!!!

If anyone wants to get back on topic, here's a great article which really does an objective job of sumerizing the whole issue. Especially note the fact that the U.S. only has about 3 percent of the world's oil reserves including off-shore and ANWR. Bringing these resources on line would have a minimal effect on the price at the pump. The larger price driver is the unregulated speculation that is finally being investigated by the FTC and congress. One thing is certain, prices will continue to increase in the near term. The real reasons behind gas prices.

You need to stop smokin' whatever it is you are smokin' and read what I wrote, I have never blamed the troops. Governments don't win WARS, they START them. Troops win them, its their blood and guts out there. American troops have backbone, its the civilians at home that don't, mainly your friends. The party that has controlled the purse strings for the most part the last 50 years are your friends, not mine. They have been more interested in structuring welfare, then repairing the infrastructure. They are more interested in propagating world order, than they are in promoting the greatness of America. Matter of fact, they are generally more interested in promoting socialism than they are in promoting individualism. Your friends are more interested in anything that is not American. Funny thing is my friends believe in the Constitution, while yours believe in neutering it.

Why do you have a problem with Iranian style Muslims? I certainly don't, nor do my friends. Matter of fact, I have no problems with Muslims at all, of any kind. Must be a character flaw of yours.

And while I am at it, for a teacher your spelling is truly atrocious. Probably should consider using the spell checker, that is what it is there for. Generally, I don't think much about spelling, but you are a teacher, and you should be setting a better example.:B

You are right. The great works were done in the past. Since a certain party has been in control or close enough to block any domestic spending they have fallen into disrepair.
May I be so bold as to suggest a majority and president of the same party who GAVE us all those great works will see fit to spend our money there instead of foriegn adventures? We have seen the biggest expansion of govt size, spending, and powers- all by "conservatives". The parties have switched sides!
There is nothing wrong with our soldiers. Talk of the great soldiers of WWII and how we now can't beat a bunch of guerrilla fighters because of a lack of "can do" demeans our troops. They are not the problem. As we proved to the Brits, as Vietnam proved to us, as Afganistan proved to the Russians, and as Iraq is proving to us yet again, a determined guerrilla force- operating on their home ground and with popular support- is unbeatable short of complete genocide. There is no lack of "can do" with America or with our soldiers.
(I'm a Vietnam Era Army Infantry vet and my son is proudly serving in the Navy.)
PS: The revisionist talk of how we could have won in Vietnam is poppycock. The enemy had popular support and our side had much, much less. The South had lost all confidence in their crooked govt and now we face that same scenario in Iraq. A govt seen as a puppet of the US. Don't blame our troops and a supposed "lack of American can-do" for poor leadership decisions. There is no winning now like there was none then. Heck, the country is mostly Iranian style muslims! And we want democracy??? So they can join Iran? The whole idea is muddle-headed. Winning will make it WORSE!

No reason to stop traveling, just recalculate!
We were planning to go from here in FL out to the grand Canyon, Yellowstone, etc. That's off. however, we are both teachers and have the whole summer. My wife's family lives around Detroit, and her brother just got laid off from his job there (Chevy related).
We are going to go up to Detroit, and he will come back with us to visit friends here. His wife will fly back from Savanna GA. He'll fly back from FL. We figure the RV miles are less than half, so it won't cost any more than the planned canyon trip. We will visit the Smokies and Appalachians, that is some pretty country. Maybe 4 to 6 weeks. It isn't necessary to stop traveling, but a trip of half length or a bit more cost no more than prior plans.
I'm getting a new fuel pump put in now, (typical Ford F53 problem, still works but overheats pump at 1/4 tank or less and burned out our gas gauge- not fun on a long trip) and then we are off! Fuel prices be dammed!

We're still camping every weekend, but we're doing it a fixed location where we have our trailer set-up and pay monthly. It's a fun RV park that caters to amateur country/western and gospel musicians and singers. Big party every weekend with lots of great barbecue, music that would rival NAshville and good fellowship (without alcohol). We have a large building that will seat 300 for a music show. We only fill it up once a year when we have our HeeHaw weekend show.

Our world is still intact without the long trips. Triple Creek RV park, near Woodville, Tyler County, Texas is down a 3 mile dirt road, hidden deep in the PIneywoods, and it's 12 miles from our home!

Those of you who can still afford to travel - come see us some weekend. I can guarantee you a good time - and a 60' pull-thru with 50 amps, WiFi and every amenity associated with a good park, minus a swimming pool. We even have a shooting range for target practice and complete barn/stable facilities for those who bring their horses (the folks with the combo rv/horse trailers). Guests have access to a 4000 acre, heavily wooded hunting lease for hiking or horseback riding from Jan 1 to Oct 1. Some of the regulars also belong to the hunting club. Best of all - it's only $18/night, $200/mo + electric for full-time, and $125/mo for four nights camping a month, including electric and $16 for extra nites. The prices are good because (1) the owner, who lives on premises, is "financially comfortable" and not in it for the money and (2) It's so far off the beaten RV track that we just about never get any one-night drop-ins, although it is listed in Woodalls. When people see the dirt road coming in, they turn around and leave. 🙂

If you come to visit us, be prepared to get your rig dusty or muddy. The road is passable but city folks are scared of it. Although it is a resident park, there are NO crummy rigs or people. Karen and Mark, the owners, are retired university professors and very choosy about their guests. Karen plays the mandolin and picks and sings with the others. We aren't musical - we just listen and maybe singalong sometimes 🙂

Not canceled just changed the way we do it.Closer to home and longer stays at state and fed parks.What we pay for elect with the fuel surcharges we all most save what we spend on camp grounds.Our next trip is 306 miles one way so around 200 for gas round trip.66.34 for camp sight for 7 days with a gray hair pass is still pretty cheap fun.We have to eat any way so I don`t count food.If we were home would be spending more money doing other things.Than we do when we are camping.

In oder to perpetuate the "security Threats" there have to be a couple of "Real" threats to show. A Token Threat, if you will.

Possibly in 2009 many of the Presumed Threats will disappear, just to show how much the 2009 group is doing for us.

At this point it is all mere speculation as to what will actually happen next year. so I think we have to wait and see.
No point in going off the deep end before it is really needed. Let us relax and calm down. Getting all upity doesn't help anyone, just raises blood pressures.

What are we only going to nationalize ExxonMobil, what about Shell, BP, Chevron and Conoco Phillips and the others. It seems to me you have to do the industry otherwise other companies are facing serious disadvantages and that is not fair to their investors. This country is all about fairness, at least according to a certain segment of its society, isn't it? Just to nationalize the big 5 you will need well over a trillion dollars. I know its chump change to some around here, but to me that is real money. Then there is the drillers, pipe line companies, independent retailers, the list goes on and on. If you didn't do it all, there would be lawsuits until Armageddon. Probably would need another two trillion to complete the job, I don't think that is within the realm of common sense, especially since it PRODUCES nothing. Because as I said, it is cash up front, no time payments. You are taking my property, and I want payment NOW. The AFLCIO, government employee's, teachers and some other unions might be willing to take payments, but individual investors are probably going to say GO SIT ON A ROCK AND TWIST. Why will they say that, you ask? Because government cannot be trusted to pay up. Just look at how they are handling Social Security. Cash talks, and that amount is just not available.

What can I say about this countries backbone? It doesn't have one any more. I think it was lost somewhere between Korea and Viet Nam. It was sure wonderful being spit at, I know I enjoyed it. NOT! This country is a shell of what it once was. Once a very proud and brave nation, now we have to ask and beg for things. It is not a pretty sight. For those who wish to talk with all of this countries enemies, fine. But just remember, when all is said and done, your freedoms will be gone, and you will be left with an empty feeling and asking what happened. Because our enemies don't believe in freedom! The scary part is that there are a lot of enemies of this great country within its borders now. They were BORN here.
