I have been a member of this forum for over 15 years and have read thousands of posts during that time. I don't know if it's me, or is there really is an increase in the use of acronyms.

I seems to have started with the computer age, and now everyone is using acronyms instead of the real word(s).

I know some of them, but no where close to knowing all. Back at the beginning, it was cute to refer the the "DW", or maybe the "MIL". But folks, it is outta hand! Half the posts I read have acronyms I don't recognize and as a result, I miss out on a lot of information.

I have never been able to write a message that was too big to post and don't know if there is a limit, so why use so many archaic and mysterious combinations of capitol letters.

You know how annoying it is when someone uses ALL capitols? Well, it's just as annoying as using TOO MANY!!!

So please, stop using ACRONYMS INSTEAD OF WORDS!

FWIW, JMHO!!!
Today is my personal best for most consecutive days alive.

I agree with larry. It's just laziness, or someone just trying to show how 'savvy' they are with the use of acronyms.

I shouldn't have to refer to any 'list' or 'Google it' to understand a plain English posting.

Just my opinion.

In the distant dawn bandwidth was a large issue. Therefore to save money and time acronyms became "polite".

If I use one, then the first time I type it out in full. Within the same post, I then use the "short form".

I agree with the original poster (OP). I feel that the acronym **** started with texting and continued with the group that can't spell. Facebook helped this phenomenon along. Ask a person to spell out AFAIK and see what you get. Another one is IMHO. It seems people are too lazy to use correct English to communicate so they use abbreviations that many find hard to understand. I can see the need for brevity when texting in traffic but you should wait for a gas station to text your worthless garbage. DW, cool, who really refers to their wife as Darling Wife, girlie men?.

I was new to the forum and was acronym ignorant. I created a post stating as such and asked for help. Someone posted a link to a list, 2 full pages, 10 point, single spaced. I keep a printed copy in a desk drawer for reference. Only 3 of 8 of NamMedevac's examples are on the list.

But we are lazy, so far as typing more than we must. I don't recall seeing that many acronyms used here lately. RV maybe? You want to type Recreational Vehicle every use? TV now that one does cause confusion: Television or Tow Vehicle. CG you prefer Campground? Rather petty for the most part, and I prefer brevity.

I think it's the result of "SMS Speak" (texting) or
lv t ll vls to save space
Leave out all vowels to save space.

Usually i can figure them out but the problem is some are mean different things depending on where I'm Sitting. Example

EMS At work Emergency Medical Service
In the forums both Energy MONITOR system and Energy Manager System (Progressive Industry and Intelletec respectively)

That is just ONE example.

And then my hobby has a long list of 'em too.

Larry...you just need to catch up. Yes due to younger members, various social messaging, this is more common.

If you don't understand, ask google, for a quick reference. As to the DW, dear this/that, seems pretty outdated to me! JMO

No, not for the common ones anyway. And if you don't know one just google it. Takes 5 seconds.
