Too much fun in the sun.... Borrego Springs

To wrap up our week in San Diego we headed out to Borrego Springs last Friday. My friend was having his annual B'day party which always coincides with the 'Borrego Days' celebration. He has 3 acres about a mile out of town and being a professional landscaper they are done up real nice. He bought the lots across the street and put in his own 2 hole golf course to go along with the fountain, pool table and waaay too many palm trees. :B

Borrego Day's is the one big event of the year complete with an hour and half long parade right though what passes for downtown. About a dozen locals in their planes buzzed the crowds repeatedly at about 60' above the parade route just before it started. Marching bands, beauty queens, lots of Harley's and antique cars kept the crowd entertained in the 80 degree sunshine.

We retreated to Jim's place to while away the afternoon with three smokers(Tri Tip, Pork Tenderloin and chicken). About seven of us each put in a buck and closest to the pin took home the money followed by a pool tournament. Our C was tucked in next to the Palapas just in front of the pop up and the yard filled up with Harley's, trucks and Jeeps. Two days and nights of way too much fun, can't wait to go back next year. :B

It's been quite a few years since I've visited the Anzza-Borrego desert but I have many fine memories dry camping in various areas of the desert in my old motorhome. When visiting Borrego Springs I always hiked Palm Canyon to the Oasis at the end of the trail. I've even hiked past the waterfall, following the stream further up the mountain. I didn't have a digital camera then so I missed some nice photos. Quite beautiful!

Sorry DesertCaptain.....I was thinking of a recent post by TucsonJim (who is retiring soon). Sounds like you are truly enjoying your retirement. Good for you!!

No problem my friend. Being retired is just about the best thing that ever happened to us and it came after a lot of planning, a little luck and 40+years of working our butts off. Just signed up for SS a couple of weeks ago, the first check will be in the bank at the end of January (my brides kicked in last year). An additional $2K a month of income opens us up to a lot more traveling which was a big part our motivation to switch to the Class C.

You never know what lies down the road and given some of the health issues we have and will continue to face there is no time like now to get out and go. If sharing our travels motivates just one person to get out there.... well my work is done. :B :B :B

Desert Captain...I understand you're retiring soon. Why not sell your house and go full-time so you can have these experiences year-round! (not particularly in Borrego year-round though ๐Ÿ™‚

Actually I retired 9 years ago. :B Now that we have the new (to us), Class C our trips are going to become longer and much more frequent. The house is is very nice in an active adult community with all of the bells and whistles and best of all it is paid for so I don't see a sale in our immediate future. Just returned (on October first), from a 38 day, 7 state, 4100+ mile jaunt around the western US.

I just booked 3 days at Roper Lake for mid November, we'll be doing lost Dutchman in Apache junction next week, we have reservations for all of Thanksgiving week at Zion. The Zion trip will of course involve a few days of coming and going on each end. We are making plans for a multi month coast to coast next spring and there has been some conversation about Alaska in 2015.

For now we will continue to chase the nice weather and beautiful places around the lower 48. The house is always nice to come home to but would not rule out full timing at some future date. :C
