Towing 1993 Jeep Wrangler

We are considering towing a 1993 Jeep Wrangler 4x4 with 4 cylinder engine and manual transmission. Does anyone have experience towing one of these? I am under the impression that it can be towed 4 down with no mods as most Wranglers can. I would like to attach towbar brackets directly to the frame members behind the bumper since baseplates for these are hard to find. Remco has no information on towability for this old of a model. All suggestions and info are welcome.

I have a 95 Wrangler SE similar to what you do. I also have the front tube bumpers. The previous owner had set it up for flat towing using a solid Reese-style towbar. The tow "tabs" (Reese style) were welded to a heavy piece of 2"X3" angle iron, and then drilled out and bolted to the frame above the bumper connection. It is very solid, and with that setup no drop hitch is required to keep the towbar parallel to the ground.
As for lights, I have a set of the magnetic ones that stick pretty well to either our YJ or JK. No splicing or diodes needed. It is kinda' tricky at first finding the sweet spot between "locked" and "accessory" where the power is off and steering wheel unlocked.

Thanks all for the great responses. I am currently using a Blue Ox towbar with concealed tabs on the towed vehicle. The Jeep in question has an aftermarket dual tube front bumper that I was hoping to weld a set of tabs to. Obviously, the bumper would need to be securely attached to the frame to withstand the forces encountered during towing. Otherwise I would need to purchase the available Blue Ox baseplate for a whopping $465.

We had a 1990, place transfer case in neutral and manual tranny in 1st gear per jeep manual. Towed fine. Ign key in off but steering wheel needs to be unlocked.
Use caution when connecting up to MH on slight grade or the slider gear in the front axle may not disengage.

Transfer case in Neutral, transmission in gear (I used fifth gear), ignition switch in "OFF, Not Locked" (there is no need to disconnect the battery) and you are good to go.
When I had my old 1995 Wrangler 4 cylinder, I always hooked it to the motorhome first, then put the transfer case in Neutral and got everything set up. That way I did not have to use the parking brake to keep it from rolling away, and I had no problem forgetting to release the brake.
I used a fixed-arm, adjustable width towbar ($165 at Walmart), with the furnished brackets bolted to the stock bumper right in front of the frame horns. No problems in many thousands of miles.
For lighting, I cut the taillight wires next to the driver's seat, and installed a 4-pin flat trailer connector. My towing wires came through the grill, down the left side of the engine compartment, through the firewall, along the left side of the tub, to the 4-pin connector. when towing, I unplugged the taillights from the vehicle wiring and plugged them into the towing wiring. Simple, quick, and easy.

Place the transfer case in Neutral the transmission in any gear, and tow.
many use a different front bumper and a solid "A" frame type tow bar rather than add attachments to the frame.

check to see if your steering wheel locks with the key off. If it does lock, turn the key on, and disconnect the battery.
