Let's share book ideas!

I'm currently reading Huckleberry Finn. Haven't read it since I was a kid and, no surprise, it's a lot more complex than I remembered :). And a good traveling book!

Also highly recommended, from my just-finished pile, Motoring with Mohammed. It's nothing about war -- it's a travelogue from the 80s, about Yemen. Beautifully written.
3/4 timing in a DIY van conversion. Backroads, mountains, boondocking, sometimes big cities for a change of pace.

An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer. Takes place before and during the Battle of Waterloo

My Dad was enthralled when we visited the site at Waterloo & announced he was climbing to the top of the monument. I was, like, "Uh, no, no, Dad... I think I'll just wait for you down here!" I'd like to read the book. I'll check my online library. They have a lot of Georgette Heyer but not necessarily the ones you've read.

BTW, I saw an episode of "Cops" set in Lynn, Ma & thought of you guys. See? I don't always have my nose in a book?

My husband is a retired lynn police sergeant. I was just looking at a pic in out local paper and in it was one of my former 5th graders. He was one of the best kids ever. Even then he wanted to be a policeman.
I have read a lot of history but knew really nothing about Napolean or the wars. It was a fascinating description with tons of details. Some sort of confusing but I looked at teh clock last night and it was 2:30AM and I didn't want to stop reading it. In the bio of Heyer there is a lot about the time and research she put into this book and the battle. It also said that her description of the battles and movements of troops was studied at West Point for years.

My service has her bio! I'll queue it up!

Oh, uh, and tell your husband I said, "Thank you for your service". It's ridiculous what we're asking of men & women wearing dark blue!

Janet Evanovich -Stephanie Plumb series. Always entertaining, no brainer reading and I catch myself laughing out loud while reading.

Bryson, Bill. "A Walk In The Woods: Rediscovering America On The Appalachian Trail".

By page 100, I was, like, "I can't believe this book hasn't been made into a movie". It is absolutely hilarious. In my head, I had already cast Hugh Grant, Zach Galifianakis &
Janeane Garofalo.

Since then, I've learned it WAS made into a movie with Robert Redford & Nick Nolte. I guess I just don't get out much!

Walk in the Woods was my first Bryson book. I LOVE his books. I have read many of them. You might like Notes from a Small Island. He married a woman from England and lived there for about 18 years. Then they moved back to US for a while and he wrote I'm a Stranger Here Myself about adjusting to life in US after living in England. I believe they are back in England again. He did a backpacking tour of Europe in his 20's and wrote Neither Here Nor There.and just this past year or so did the journey again and wrote about it in another book The Road to Little Dribbling. I also love One Summer American 1927. It was all about Charles Lindberg , Babe Ruth, Al Capone, Calvin Coolidge and the lead up to the Depression and lots of other events that took place that year. I never realized that Lindberg was such a star and hero of those times. I think the best Bryson thought is A Short History of Nearly Everything. He writes about everything.... just everything. It was fascinating as all get out. Another one I loved is At Home..A Short History of Private Life. He walks around his house from room to room and writes all about houses and things to do with house and how people lived and used houses.
As you might be able to tell I am a huge fan of Bryson.

A fearsome doubt by Charles Todd. One of his good ones. These books are about murder in post WW1 England. The story lines and the descriptions are very well done.

finished Firestorm by Nevada Barr. Not bad about firefighters in a huge forest fire and murder.

I love her books. It so interesting to learn about all the NP she works in. The only one I couldn't read was the one she goes down into a cave. Too claustrophobic for me. One of my favorites buy her is the one that takes place on Isle Royale about the wolves.
