Additional Vacinations for western states

We will be taking our two Aussies with us to Mt. Rushmore this year. They currently have all the vaccinations recommended for our local area, but we are concerned that additional shots may be needed for the mid-west and western states. Do you have any suggestions that I can pass to our vet?

Thank all of you for the input. The dogs have all of thire basic shots along with Lepto, Kennel Cough, and Lymes. I know that the dogs will not be allowed into the monument proper, but they will be with us at the campgrounds along the trip.

Pets are not allowed in any part of the Memorial except:

in the pet exercise areas areas located at each end of the upper level of the parking facility
at the entrance to the main visitor area, by the benches at the main pergola (the row of large columns at the walk in entrance)
Please pick up after your pet with bags that are provided in the pet exercise areas.

You may want to consider using a kennel service available in nearby communities.

Service dogs are permitted to accompany visitors with disabilities in all areas open to the public at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

If you decide to take them, there are quite a few kennels you could board them at in close proximity. I would check with your vet on the vaccines.

Yes, but there are regional variations and diseases that just aren't where you are at home, so this is a good question.

As far as vaccinations, core vaccinations should be up to date (rabies, parvo, distemper, hepatitis). Lepto is becoming more of a problem in some regions, so that is a possible addition. Going through campgrounds, rest areas it might be a good idea to add Bordetella (kennel cough)and should be considered. Lyme isn't real big threat until you get to the upper midwest. (We live and travel in this area and do not do lyme vaccination on ours, but are meticulous about fleas/tick control).

Heartworm prevention, flea and tick control is a must.

Being ex-military, you are probably all set, but make sure you have all your boosters up to date. Especially with the measles outbreak due to Antivaxxers. Fido and Fidette are not the only ones that should be vaccinated.

If your dogs have all the basic and required vaccinations... parvo, rabbis, distemper maybe kennel cough and are protected from heart worm (carried by mosquitos) they will be good to go.
