Crazy Lady or Good Puppy Mommy?

DH and I differ on this one. We have a Jack Russell Mix who LOVES her stuffed toys. But, because she's a Jack, she has a tendency to be just a "bit" rough on them! :B I am constantly repairing one of them....bet I average 2 a month. Some are so old (aka--loved) that I repair the repairs! But, every time she rips them up, I take out my needle and thread and perform surgery. DH says that she's "just a dog" and that if we toss them she won't know the difference. But I know better! I have put them in closets while she is outside, and the little devil will search the RV until either she finds it or I get tired of her whining and go get it. Bill says I'm a push-over. I say I'm just being a good Mommy. ? She's smart---knows each by name. Big Kitty, Little Kitty, Ricky (the raccoon), Lucy (the lion). Who's side are YOU on? 😉

Very smart! I wish I could repair the toys the GSD destroys, but I'm not good enough with a needle!

Funny, the things you pick up off the ground on a walk. I save every abandoned sock and small rubber ball I find. Wash socks, stick a nice chewy rubber ball and/or a squeaker in the toe of the sock. Then tie a knot or machine sew back and forth across the sock an inch or two above the "additions." Let dog watch you throw the new toy and you won't see him for a few hours. I've never had them get that ball out of there, either. In another sock, I put three squeakers (cheap from Amazon) and sewed a line across the sock between each squeaker and another line at the top. Then I drew an eyeball on the sock over each squeaker. That "three-eyed monster" has been one of their favorite toys, played with more than store bought toys. Kids socks are especially good for this purpose if you have toy breed dogs. The sand box at the tot lot is a goldmine, sometimes. :W I don't pick up a pair, only the occasional orphan sock.

our Izzy never played with toys other than a wee sheep that she would pick up and move around the house ...one day it was missing and she cried and whimpered day in and day out so I went back to the same store and lo and behold there was another one...she knew right away that it wasn't her " baby " but did nuzzle it once in awhile..about a month later I was flipping the mattress on our bed and there was baby #1 caught between the mattress and the bed frame...Izzy cried and cried when I gave it to her...she nibbled and nibbled it.. she moves the two of them around everyday..they are on the top of our must take with list for when we move...she would be devastated without the babies...thankfully she doesn't tear them up as I can't sew LOL

Old blue jeans (from the thrift store) can be turned into toys that are more durable than average.

Great idea. I have enough "holey" bjs to keep our dogs in toys for years. Wife can just sew a bell inside of the toy or even no bell.

Boy, that takes me back.

I won a prize for reciting that poem in the first grade, and my mother gave me a stuffed Purple Cow in honor of the occasion. That would have been in 1958...and I still have the cow!

Just let Millie try to sink her little terrier teeth into that and there'll be trouble...;)

Ha ha! I have recited that poem a time or two or forty for my (younger) husband, especially when Loppy had his special purple cow. The hubs always looked at me like I was crazy. Nope just a bit older..... But not quite your age. :W I would still rather see than be one!

If we're ever camped in the same spot I'd be glad to teach you the prize-winning hand gestures! :B

Do you know the second verse?

Poor Gelett Burgess...it drove him bats that everyplace he went folks recited the original at him...his whole life's work forgotten except for that little ditty.

Finally, in frustration, he penned the following:

Gelett Burgess wrote:
Ah yes, I wrote "the Purple Cow"
I'm sorry now I wrote it
But I can tell you anyhow
I'll KILL YOU if you quote it!

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if that is etched on his tombstone...

I repaired a purple cow toy for our Loppy several times. It was his favorite, once it was beyond repair he accepted a hedgehog toy and had many of them over the years.... They were much easier to find and buy replacements for then the purple cow. 🙂 I say it is completely normal.

Your completely normal, at least from my perspective. I did the same thing for any of my dogs that were attached to a particular stuffed toy.
My buddy Zachery had a small stuffed Giraffe named Pede, he had to have or know where that guy was at all times, it was his. I repaired it so many times that when Zack passed away it was surely time to retire the giraffe so I buried Zack with his beloved Pede.

Tried to post a picture of her, but can't. Will have to work with it to see if I can get it figured out later.

You might want to start buying the stuffless toys. Squeaky toys brings out their prey drive - the high-pitched squeaker sounds like caught prey screaming to get away, which really excites a dog prone to that sort of thing. I hope your dog isn't ingesting any of the stuffing as she tears it out. I'd worry about a blockage.

Keep repairing! You are a great mommy, and yes, she will know the difference.

We fostered 2 jacks for a short time for a family member. Dang dogs have deductive reasoning!

Jill, the female had a frisbee she was obsessed with. Threw it one time and it went into our orange tree. She searched the area, couldn't find it. Came back and checked to make sure we didn' t have it. Went back and crawled up and throught the leaves, into the tree to find it. Amazing.

Keep the needle and thread!

That's (from what I was told) close to how the NDSDF test's a new dog to see if the dog would be a candidate to enter the training program.
