Max - New Dachshund Foster!

Time for a new foster! I got Max, a standard dachshund puppy (4-5 mo.) old yesterday. He was in another foster home, but started being WAY too interested in the lady's elderly cats, so he had to go.

Max looks to be at a good weight, and he has a shiny coat.

He's not reliably house trained (from what I've read and heard, this is a common doxie problem), so we're going back to House Training 101. I don't think the former foster was consistent, so he never became reliable in the house, which is a shame. He should be trained by now, don't you think? She's had him since being rescued from a puppy mill at around 5 weeks old.

Also, she free feeds all her dogs, so she couldn't tell me how much to feed Max. :R Since I've never had a doxie before, I don't have a clue. I know the amounts on the dog food bags are usually excessive, so I'm having to guess. I don't want him to become overweight, due to their propensity for back issues. Also, should he still be fed 3x daily at 4-5 months old, or is he ready to be fed 2x daily?

Any advice from dachshund owners is welcome! I'll post a photo whenever I can get him to hold still long enough for one to not be blurry - lol!

He seems to be quite the little man. Our three Chihuahuas love to go camping with us and we enjoy having them along too.

Please check the second photo. I think you'll find a couple of things missing - lol!

Can't help with info on Doxies--but wanted to comment on the fact that he's so CUTE!!! Good luck with him. I wouldn't think it would be hard to find his furever home. Keep us posted!

We never had a problem with housebreaking for our dachs. Feed him on a regular schedule. I have never been a proponent of free feeding. IMO it's more difficult to control portions and predict potty times.

Most dogs will develop a pattern of how soon after eating, they need to go out. Feeding at a scheduled time will make it easier to see what his routine is going to be.

Oh he's a cutie! At his age I'd stick with three times a day feeding for a few more weeks.

I just noticed that. Man is his tail long! Should give him more straight line stability while runnin in them races though. However, it could cause him to have some tail dragg'in, which may slow him down abit as well.

Anyways, you won't really know till you start race'in him.

What a cutie! I'd be a foster failure - that's why I don't volunteer to foster with sheltie rescue! Good luck and may you have many happy memories while you foster him.

X2. Fostering is harder then adopting a rescue. With a foster, you get to love them and then they move on. Hats off to you.

You are spot on for feeding Max.

If he is not neutered, please have it done.

We have 5 mini spayed mini dachshund females. Allow them up on furniture but we purchased pet steps from Petco and PetSmart. Saved on the back injuries.

Historically, common issues with this breed are teeth, uti's, spinal and hip issues.

Each of ours has a health program through PetSmart/Banfield Pet Hospital. A truly valuable insurance.

Our little pack are defenders of the realm.

Thank you for taking Max. He will reward you with his love and allegiance!

Thanks Wanda! I've heard doxies are stubborn, but I've had boxers, so no worries there - lol! Too late about getting on furniture. Max was spoiled at his former foster and promptly got on our couch as soon as we got him home...

I finally got some photos of Max - not the greatest quality, but at least not too blurry. He's pretty easy going, although he loves to play, like most puppies. I found out this morning that he loves split antlers, which are providing him some needed chewing and keeps him from chewing on my laptop wire... 😉

We had a rescue dachshund a number of years ago. They are a hard-headed, stubborn breed.

Ours weighed about 17-18 #. I gave her between 1/2 and 3/4 of a cup of good quality kibble, two times a day.

One thing our vet had suggested for her, as a preventative was Vetri Disc. A supplement -- because of their propensity for back issues.
If the dog is not used to getting on the furniture, I would not encourage it, as jumping off of furniture they can land wrong and mess up their back.
