What was I thinking??? :-(

I was getting the motorhome ready for a quick trip, and since puppy Ben has never seen it, I backed it out of the barn, let him look/sniff... we practiced going up and down the steps, etc. I mean, surely he could smell the fact that Jack and Jimmy had been in the big white thing before?

But to confirm to him that it was a wonderful thing to be in - I let Jimmy and Jack out of my office. Once they spotted the big white beast out of its garage - they went crazy and jumped right in. Ben happily followed!

And now I have the 2 older dogs all buzzed up about camping 😞 Jack is whining, Jimmy is glued to my side. They are going to drive me CRAZY until we actually hit the road.... sigh....

I'm sure ALL the dogs on this forum react similarly?? I can't imagine a dog who doesn't like to camp!

It is great to read all these threads about our dogs. If we as humans loved each other the way our pets do this world would be sooooo much better.

When I pull the fiver from the shelter to the driveway that is the clue for Lucky and Lucie to start getting excited. The walk each step with us as we carry the food to the frig. But when I put their camping bed in the trailer I have to start the truck and let them get in. I always put that article in last.

Oh, you guys are making me miss Poquita so much! Whenever and wherever we traveled, people would have a fit over her. Nobody had ever seen a dog that looked like her before (rather like a 5 lb fox with black mask) She'd stand in the passenger seat and watch out the window like a hawk while Bud pumped gas, bought coffee or went through the door of a rest stop. She couldn't rest until he was safely back in the driver's seat. On cold nights, she'd cuddle in my sleeping bag with me. Amazing what a giant hole such a tiny creature can leave in your life.

I dunno about camping, specifically. I mean, our dog just loves to GO. Anywhere. Anyhow. Anytime. Go! Go! Go! Go!!!!!!!!

Yeah, mine too. He doesn't mind camping. He just wants to be near me all the time. ALL the time. Last time we took him out camping, he woke up and started crying in the middle of the night. DH had to get him out of his crate and put him in the bed with us so we could all get some sleep. Funny thing is, he LOVES his crate at home. He doesn't even dream of getting up in the bed with us. He'll stand in front of his crate until you open the door and he happily goes in and flops down. Silly little dog!

Our collie loved to camp, anytime the door was open she jumped in and sat on the top stair watching out the door, waiting to go. On the road when we made any stops she would perch on the dash checking out all the people checking her out. Campgrounds she loved the children and adults she met and the hikes through the mountains. If I took the RV out for an oil change or repair without her...when I got back home she'd give me the cold shoulder for hours because I didn't take her with me. We really miss her. She made our trip complete.

ROFLMAO!!!!! "Camping pheromones" - yeah - THAT must be it!! Because my dogs ALWAYS knew... and when Ed and I would discuss an upcoming trip, we'd speak in "code" - referring to the "large white recreational vehicle" going on a "weekend journey with overnight accomodations" - because the words "motorhome", "park", or "camping" always set them off....

Our peek-a-pom always tries to go up the camper steps when we walk by. It is truly her home away from home.

ROFL!!! They DO love camping, don't they?

I paid the price yesterday, though, for teaching Ben to like camping. After having 2-1/2 days of outdoor time, complete with doting grandkids.... he was a true stinker on Monday. Our "normal routine" isn't near enough fun and he was asking to go out about every hour...only to simply flop down on his side in the grass or chase a butterfly.......

Now that's funny. The other night, I called out the backyard for Mica, our Rat Terrier. She didn't come, so I went back inside and called for her inside. Nothing. Now I began to worry, wondering if she somehow got out of the back yard or I inadvertently closed the closet door on her, so I opened every closet. I couldn't find her anywhere. Ok, time to panick. I yelled for Dave and told him I can't find Mica anywhere. Oh my God. All sorts of terrible thoughts ran through my mind, running up and down the neighborhood, calling the pound to report her missing, and worse . . . never finding her. Dave yells out to me and says, "I found her . . . she's sitting on the steps of the fifth wheel . . . "

Well, Ben is hopelessly addicted. Loved camping beyond words! Of course it helped that there were plenty of kids to play with 🙂 But the real confirmation of his enjoyment, was that after we arrived home (technically at work where the motorhome is parked) - he ran out with the other two dogs, pottied, then ran back to the MH and wanted to stay there!

These stories are all so similar. Who is spreading the rumors that pets are left home alone, or abandoned at the campground on a regular basis? It makes me think that a pet's life is one of two things: Camping, and waiting to go camping!

A few years ago, we had somebody on this board whose little dog sneaked into the RV while it was being loaded and nobody saw her. It was a hot day and by the time they looked for her, it was too late. 😞

Yet another hazard to be aware of.

Any time our cat saw either of us go out to th TT he was ready to go camping. We had to be careful when we we outside because he would make a dash for the trailer. Not that we had to round him up because he would always be on the steps waiting to get in. He did not understand that sometimes we were just taking something out and were not leaving.
