Electric step

Hello,

My electric step will not stay out in the "off" position. It goes in and out as the door opens and closes. But the step only stays in instead of out when the switch is off
Thank you for any help.

You replaced the controller with the wrong controller. Get the right controller and replace the wrong controller.

If you are replacing the step controller (Old with a new style) one way to get the steps to follow the door is to reverse the motor leads. So Out is in and in is out.

Not the best idea because the ignition override would then EXTEND the steps but you can disable that.

I can see a short cutter doing it that way.

This is about the only thing I can think of.

I don't really know what you said and I have very high regard for your knowledge but what are you suggesting? I don't think he should change anything. He should follow the step by step trouble shooting instruction in Kwikee manual 888. That is if his steps are Kwikee steps.

The Kwikee steps are so simple mechanically and electronically, oh my goodness why try anything else. If they don't work as they should repair them don't jury rig them except to get to a location to get them fixed and even then jury rigging is questionable.

Once again I respect your knowledge very much and you seem to have a great background in electronics, but, I don't agree. If they aren't working repair them and don't use them until you do.

There is also the fact you said "OFF"

There are two swich functions for the Kwikee steps

Old style it was clled POWER and OFF meant.. Well.. OFF

new style it is called OVERRIDE and OFF, means steps follow door
ON means it stays out (or in your case in)

Strongly suggests an old controller replaced with a new one, but still using the old door switch.

Edit- I just see you did put a Kwikee part on a Coach Step.
Never mind.

So the only fix is original part . It's a 2005 newmar

ORIGINAL PART IS THE ONLY FIX RIGHT?

So the only fix is the original part since I don't have a new switch is that right.

Leave the switch in the On position- Kwikee changed the switch operation, it is now an override switch, and in the on position, overrides the door switch.
From the Kwikee FAQ (#2).

I'm assuming the door switch does operate like it should- door open, step extends, etc.

I put a Ford Part on a Chevy and now the car does not run right. THIS type of info would have been helpful in your first post. Please clarify.
1. You still have the SCS (Coach) step but are using a Kwikee Step module? If so, THAT is definitely your problem. The controller parameters are different for SCS and Kwikee.
2. The Door magnet switch is also different (Normally open versus normally closed).
3. WHY did you use a Kwikee instead of SCS module?
4. What year model RV?
This is kwikee door switch guidelines
White
(Normally Closed)
Used for all color controls
manufactured prior to 2/99.
Black (Normally Open)
Used for "black" controls
since 2/99 including controls

This is SCS Coach step magnet guidelines.

Steps are designed to extend when the door switch closes (magnet is removed) and the switch completes the ground

With ours, we open the door so the step extends out (with switch on) then while the door is still OPEN, shut the switch off. When you shut the door, the steps should stay out.

try this
after engine is off
door switch on
open door let step go all the way out
then close door and let it retract
repeat again.. open then close

now on the third time open door..after step goes out and stops
turn off switch

my step has a replacement controller .. sometime before we got the RV
and this is the procedure i use to keep our step out

if this does not work for you, you have a bad controller or something is wired wrong,
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !
